PECAN

Tips For Good Return
On Your Pecan Crop

By W. C. CARTER

Extension Marketing Specialist,
Fruits, Vegetables and Pecans

Pecan harvesting is just around the
ner. With a large crop in prospect,
wers should make every effort to mar-
only the best quality nuts if they are
receive a good price.

Prospects point to a large crop in
eorgia this year. However, due to the
fact that there is very little carry over
nd that the quality of this years nuts is
<pected to run high, buyer and consum-
' demand is also expected to be high.
ithout question low quality will be a
g on |
wers must take every precaution to
ake sure that only good quality is of-
red for sale. :
Past records show that in years of
ave storage space available, or can ac-
juire adequate storage facilities, can prof-
by storing their pecans and holding
1em off of the market until prices have
-a chance to stabilize after the rush of
arvest and heavy marketing.

If you are a grower and are interested
1 selling a good quality pecan, you
1ould pay particular attention to the
oints listed below as a basis for your
keting program.

ick up Pecans as Soon as They Fall.

Nuts left on the ground during rainy

r very cold weather are sure to lose in
duality Besides discoloring the shell, the
meat may also be damaged. Since bad
ther may occur at any time, it is best
egin harvesting as they fall. This will
p maintain the quality that the trees
e produced. pee

Harvest as Soon as Shuck Opens.

After the nut has reached maturity as
evidenced by the opening and loosening
of the shuck, harvesting should begin.
rost will hasten this process and at the
me time make the job of removing the
s from the trees much easier. The ac-
tual job of removing the nuts from the
s may be done by any one of several
hods such as_ shaking, bumping or
ling with a pole. The point to remem-
er is that pecans left on the trees after
ee maturity will begin to lose

"FARM BUREAU DAY
OCTOBER 3, 196

By DR. HARRY L, BROWN, President
_ Georgia Farm Bureau Federation

EDITORS NOTE: The following re-'
_marks were made by Dr. Harry L.
Brown, President of the Georgia
Farm Bureau Federation, in obser-
vance of Farm Bureau Day, October
3. Even though this day has passed,
the editors of the BULLETIN feel
that these remarks are worthy of re-
print at any time of year, but espe-
cially so during the month of Octo-
ber when we observe Farm Bureau
Day. :

Unity of purpese, and the striving to-
gether for rural progress holds hope to
th farm community and entire state.

in a clean dry place that is not subject to

either high or low temperatures until
they are to be sold. As a rule, buyers dis-
count the price paid for pecans that are
harvested early and have not been al-
lowed to season properly or dry-out. Be-
cause of this the grower will do well to
hold his crop until he is sure he can com-
mand the best price by offering a top
quality nut:

4. Grade and Clean Before Selling.

A good job of harvesting should also
include keeping varieties separate. Where
any mix-up has occurred the job of clean-
ing and grading can generally correct
this. For those growers who have a me-
chanical blower and grading belt, the
task is much simpler than for the small
grower who does not have available such
equipment. A fairly good job of grading
and removing trash can be done by using
a homemade outfit that is both easy and
inexpensive to make. Plans for this type
of grader are available from your local
county agent. Ask for Agricultural Engi-
neering Leaflet P.G.H. entitled Sug-
gested Pecan Grader For Home Use.

May each Georgian, and farm family in
particular, observe Farm Bureau Day in
Georgia on October 3with a determina-

tion to re-affirm our individual faith in

united farmer effort to help ourselves.
As a farm people, and a predominate-
ly farm state, may we realize we must
work with what we have. Agriculture is
essential to the majority of the millions
af Georgians; and necessary to the ex-
istence of the remainder who may not
think so. We do not live by bread alone.
But we live by bread also. ;
In our society, and system, we live by
the principle that each is awarded ac-
cording to his effort. This is a great sys-
tem. But on this occasion, we would like ~
to emphasize to the non-rural segment of
Georgia, and the nationthat the farm-

ers of this nation are not being rewarded

consistent with their contributions to oth-
er economic segments. %

Through the efficiency and labor of
the American farmer, this nations popu-
lation is the best fed and clothed of any
people on the face of the globe. This is
cbtained from the farmer at the least por-
tion of spendable income about 20 per-
cent. In most other countries the non-

farm population must spend 50 percent

of their spendable income for food. Food
in America is the greatest bargain found

on counters of distributing centers today.

May this nation realize this. Agricul-
ture is not being subsidized, It is agricul-
ture that is subsidizing the growth and
development of America. It is a paradox
indeed, that farmers have over $200 bil-
lion invested in their productive plant. It
is said the nations net farm income is
approximately $11 1/2 billion.

We all know that in industry there
must be interest on investment for the
stockholders. In addition, labor must be
paid. Management must be paid. Factory
workers wages averaged $2.29 an hour
last year.

What happened to the farmer. A five
percent return on his investment would
be equivalent to the national net farm in-
come. Meaning, he would do about as

well to invest in blue chips, and let the

2 percent of the nations population get
food and fiber wherever they could find
it It also means the nations farm labor,
the operator and his family is being ex-
ploited without a wage return. This
amounts to the greatest subsidy to non-
farm people this nation hasnt heard
much about.
To each individual farm family, we

urge each of you to join and support your

Farm Bureau on Farm Bureau Day, Oc-
tober 3. As farm people lets work togeth=
er through Farm Bureau to do something |
about this.
