Russell Announces Poultry
Use in Lunch Program
- Senator. Richard B. Russell was. ad-.
vised recently that the U. S. Department
of Agriculture will purchase 570,000
pounds of Georgia poultry in December
to be used for the School Lunch Program.
The purchase is part ot a total order
of 2,850,000 pounds of young chicken to
be bought by the Agriculture Depart-
ment with the total expenditure of $822,-
000 coming from funds appropriated un-
der the National School Lunch Act.
- Senator Russell instigated action this
- year in the Agriculture Department to
| include poultry in the Federal School
Lunch Program, and as a result of his
work in that direction, more than five
million pounds of poultry meat has been
purchased for Americas school children.
co, the U. S. Department of Agriculture
has announced a total of 716,147 acres
available for allotment. This compares
with 715,817 acres available for allotment
last year.
If quotas for flue-cured tcbacco are
approved by at least two-thirds of the
growers voting, the law provides that the
present program will be continued for
the next three cropswith penalties on
excess tobacco marketed, acreage al-
lotments and price supports.

third of the voters disapprove quotas by
Social Security Revises
Agent, Landowner Coverage
The Social Security Administration
now considers both the activities of an
agent for a farm landlord and the activi-
ties of the landowner in deciding whether
the owners farm rental income is cover- |
ed by the social security law.
In making this announcement, Mr.
_J..R. Murphy of the Atlanta Social Se-
curity District Office stated that previ-
ously only the activities of the farm
landlord counted in deciding whether the
wage earner materially participated on
his farm, and went on to emphasize that
under this more liberal rule, many more
farm owners may now be eligible for so ~
cial security protection.
As a practical matter, he said, this
means that some farm owners who were |
previously found ineligibie for social se-
curity may now qualify He gave for
example, a farm owner who lives in town
and under an arrangement with the ten-
ant has an agent supervising the work of
the tenant. The agent makes all the im-
portant decisions affecting the produc-
tion of the crop. Previously, the farm
owner could not receive social security
credits for his share of the earnings from
the farm. Now through the agent he ma-
terially participates in the farm activities
and can receive social security credits.
Mr. Murphy stressed that farm land-
lords, whose claim for benefits has been
denied because the agent rather than the
owner was supervising the tenant, should
get in touch with the nearest social se-
curity office. He further added that any-
one who has questions concerning his
coverage under this new provision should
also contact the office.
voting NO, there will be no marketing
quotas, no penalties on excess tobacco,
and no price support program on the 1962
crop.
Voting places will be set up in as many _
as three places in each community. Check
with your local ASC office to locate the
voting place nearest you. .
Each farmer eligible to ute in these
referendums is urged to do so.

A do-it-yourself.
retirement plan
that really works
Just a few pennies a day invested now in U.S. Savings
Bonds can help you build security for the future.
Heres a retirement plan you can set up yourself, administer
yourself with no fees or expenses, and go into with absolute
confidence.
Start with Series E Bonds
You begin by buying E Bonds where you bank, or auto-
matically on the Payroll Savings Plan where you work.
When you hold them for 17 years, 9 months, you get almost
double your money back--$1.93 for every $1 invested.
When you retire, you can exchange your E Bonds for H
Bonds. H Bonds pay interest to you semi-annually in cash
at 3.75% when held to maturity. Theres no charge for
trading. And the interest you accumulated before the trade
is not taxable until you cash in your H Bonds.
A riskless plan
A US. Savings Bonds retirement plan is completely without
risk. Your money keeps on growing, guaranteed by the
Government. You can get it anytime you wantwith inter-
est. And if your Bonds are ever lost or destroyed, the
Treasury replaces them free.

Good Peanut Stand
Depends on Vitality
By LYTTON W. BOYLE
Plant Pathologist
Georgia Experiment Station
When poor stands of peanuts are ob-
tained, confusion develops as folks start
pointing accusatory fingers in any one of
several directions: the farmer who either.
produced or planted the seed, the labora-
tory that tested the seed, the research
agency that recommended certain prac--
tices, and at times even the weatherman.
This practice of passing the buck is
bound to be a favorite when .so many
people either directly or indirectly in-
fluence a product.
The value of a seed peanut depends
upon its vitality, Many people have the
idea that a determination of how many
seed are dead or alive (per cent germina-
tion) in a sample is an adequate measure
of vitality. Vitality is more than just the
presence of life or per cent germination.
It includes the ability to endure and
continue under adverse conditions. Sci-
ence has determined certain factors that
influence the vitality or reserve in a seed,
but it has not as yet found a quick test to
evaluate. this reserve.
Seed lots should be saved only from
healthy crops. The practice of cleaning
up peanut seed lots from crops where
disease has been severe and pod rots
prevalent is a hazard. Seed lots in which
many seed are discolored should be view-

Screwworm Check Points
Due to the serious threat of the
screwworm spreading info Southern areas
where it could survive the winter, check-
points for all livestock moving from
Georgia into Florida have been set up at
Folkston and Thomasville.
Any livestock movement through
South Georgia into Florida must be routed
through Folkston or Thomasville where it
will be inspected for screwworm infesta-
tion.
This step is being taken in a co-
operative effort among Georgia, Florida
and U. S. D. A. officials to fight the
spread of screwworm infestation and to
keep the screwworm from getting into
warm climate zones where if could live
through the winter and plague the South-
eastern area with serious livestock losses
next Spring.
ed with suspicion even though they seem
to have a reasonable germination percent-
age under laboratory condition.
Great care must be used to prevent
undue exposure of the nuts during har-
vest. It takes study and experience to de-
velop the judgement and craftsmanship
required to form a proper windrow of
peanuts,
Peanuts in large carelessly formed
windrows do not dry uniformly. Some
may stay wet for long periods during
which rots may develop. Nuts on the out-
side of a windrow may absorb more of
the heat rays from the sun than one
might suspect. Under such exposure, the
temperature within the nut may become
high enovgh to reduce the vitality of the
seed.
For the same reason, the temperature
healt be carefull cont
age to a minimum. However, such dam:
I
exceed 100 F. Many ed
nuts result when shelling p it
have been improperly cured. Poot st
and: many undesirable plants of poor
or may be obtained when such seed 5
are planted.
In theory, all peanut seed
hand shelled to avoid bruising and 0
damage. The stand from hand shel
samples is consistently better than
machine shelled samples of the
seed stock. In practice therefore, gr
care must be used in the adjustment a
operation of a sheller to hold such da
age may not be limited to the shelling
can also result from rough handling wh
seed are being loaded or stored.
~All peanut seed should be treated
protect them from loss of vitality and
tack of soil-inhabiting organisms af
planting. Treatment is only to prot
the vitality already in the seed. No tre
ment is known to bring life or vital
back after it has been lost. This-is_
especially important point to remem
while considering seed problems.
Farmers should study and learn
apply the tillage, planting and cultur.
practices, harvesting, and handling re
commended by research and extens
agencies. These will help get the mos
turn from good seed or produce oF I
seed for another crop. :
