now they need some special attention.
Trees that have a heavy to an unusually
heavy set of nuts need more fertilizers
such as 6-12-12 or 5-10-15. Apply up to
1/3 of the total requirement per tree or
per acrethirty pounds now for trees
that were large or old enough to have re-
ceived 90 pounds back in February or
500 pounds per acre on the acreage that
received 1500 pounds in the spring.
COMPETITIVE VEGETATION such
as grasses and weeds should be kept un-
der control by mowing or harrowing
lightly. This will conserve moisture and
fertilizers.
DISEASES and INSECTS should be
kept under control by following a spray
schedule, Your county agent has a sche-
dule for you.
LIMB BREAKAGE will be tremend-
ous on trees that are being brought back
into production after being neglected for
a spellparticularly true with the Stuart
variety. Remove these limbs from the
grove as they may cause borers to infest
the trees after they have infiltrated the
broken limbs.
YOUNG NON - BEARING trees
should receive 2 pounds of 6-12-12 or
5-10-15 for each year they have been
growing. Many 1 and 2 year old trees can
be kept alive by applying 4 to 5 gallons of
water every 10 days in the absence of
rain,
CAUTION All fertilizers for both
young and old pecan trees should be ap-
plied by the end of July.
