1960, Georgia Hedecnives were

-packaged foods and store scales.
shants were saved more than $41,-
lar checks on their scales and
rmers alone were saved approx-
$5,325 through checks on tobacco
in warehouses.
milk tanks checked disclosed er-
nting to approximately $7,400,
2 twelve month operation.
ugh merchants and warehouse-
ten have scales in error that are
ig them, most of the errors dis-
are in the dealers favor. _
aul I. Morris, head of the Weights
easures Section, noted that of the
iL re-packaged items checked by
ion in 1960, 20,734 were found in
And he said, For some strange
inations made by these inspectors |
none of the packages weighed
MORE than the label indicated.
Scale checks, too, saved the consumer
almost five times as much as they did the
merchant,
Not only does the inspector protect
the merchant and consumer from errors
in the actual weighing of foods, he is also
the restraining effect in protecting the
legitimate retailer from the unfair com-
petition of the retailer who advertises im-
possible low prices and then covers the
loss-by short weights to the purchase
Items found most subject to this kind
of unfair competition are poultry and all
meats, Morris said.
However, an honest error in the re-
tailers scales can cost him money fast. A
one half ounce error can cost the mer-
chant as much as $1,000 a year in profit.
In addition to checks made on food
product scales, State Department of Re-
venue inspectors make regular checks on
gasoline pumps in the state. To illustrate
the importance of this program to the
public, assume that all of the motor fuel
were sold to the consumer with a shortage
of one tablespoonful per gallon. This.
would amount to a loss to the people of
the State of pp aay $125,000 per
month: =
And so we realize, as stated in the
proclamation making this Weights a n d
Measures Week in Georgia, Honest
weights and measures are indispensable,
not merely to the economy of the State
ae to the daily lives of all persons in
it.

Russell Gets USDA
To Purchase Poultry
Thanks to Georgia Senator Richard B.
Russell, approximately $2,000,000 worth
of broilers has been purchased by the U.
S. Department of Agriculture for distri-
bution under the School Lunch Program
Act.
Russell has strongly urged for some
time that poultry meat be included in the
School Lunch: Program. This is the first
time that the U. S. Department of Agri-
culture has done so.
While the initial amount the U. S.
Department plans to purchase (five mil-
lion pounds of cut-up young chickens) is
very small, it still marks a significant ad-
vance in the campaign to expand present
markets and develop new ones for the
growing broiler industry, Russell said.
Georgia is the nations leading broiler
producer, accounting for one-sixth of the
total national production last year. Broil-
ers are also the states major source of
farm income, amounting to more than
$170 million in 1960.
Russell is to be commended for his
success in having broilers included in the
School Lunch Program as this could be
of great benefit and significance to the
poultry farmers of Georgia.
