~ Equipment Of Farms
A recent statistical report shows that
in 1959 there were 4 3 /4 million tractors
on U. S. farms which now supply the
power formerly supplied by about 20 mil-
lion horses.
There were 3,060,000 motortrucks on
our farms last year, more than twice as
many as in 1945, and on January dy 1959,
there were 1, 060, 000 grain combines on
farms, compared with 980,000 in 1954.
The number of cornpickers on farms is
shown to have increased by 420,000 from
1945 to 1952, making a total of 760,000
on January 1, 1959.
The report further shows that the
number of field forage harvesters on
farms increased from 81,000 in 1950 to
an estimated 264,000 in 1959. The num-
ber of power elevators on farms has in-
creased by about 125 per cent since 1951,
and farms with chain saws doubled be-
tween 1954 and 1958.
Farmers are using a lot more power-
lawn mowers now, too. In 1958 about
1,800,000 of them were in use, a 50 per
cent increase over 1954.
NUMBER 19
Don't Overpay For
Mt Pick-Up Tags
By PHIL CAMPBELL
Commissioner Of Agriculture
It has been called to my attention that
some farmers are under the impression
that they may have to pay as much as $13
for their farm pick-up truck license tag
for 1961.
Farmer-owners of one half ton pick
ups should not pay more than five dollars
tags for trucks, it was not its intent that
farmers should pay more than five dol-
lars for pick-up truck tags.
Some Revenue Department agents
have been mis-interpreting the wording
of the law, indicating that some farmers
would possibly have to pay as much ag
$15 for their tags.
I have requested Rep. David Newton
of Colquitt County to introduce a clarifys
ing resolution during the present session
of the legislature that it was the specifie
intent of the legislature that no farmer
would have to pay more than five dollars
for his pick-up tag.
The law clearly states that the price
of a tag on a truck that with capacity
load would not exceed 6000 Ibs. shall
only be five dollars. It is highly improb-
able that any farm pick-up with a maxi-
mum load would weigh more than 6000
Ibs.
Since the tags went on sale January
3, I want to warn farmers not to pay
more than this for their tags. If there ig
any question with the agent in your area A
concerning the cost of your truck license sane
tag, wait until the clarifying resolution :
is passed before you purchase your tag,

MILO AS GOOD AS CORN
FOR BROILER CHICKS.
In recent tests by the University of
Arkansas at Fayetteville, broiler chicks
did as well on milo as those fed on corn.
The basal test diet in the Arkansas study
contained about 60 percent ground yel-
low corn, This diet was compared with .
diets where milo replaced all, two-thirds,
one-half, and one-third of the corn.
During the 4-week tests, no difference
was noted in chick growth and efficiency
of feed utilization when corn, milo, or
any of the combinations were fed. All
diets were improved, the Arkansas study
showed, by pelleting in that the chicks
gained faster on less feed. The pellets,
5/32 inch in size, were crumbled for the
first week, but were fed whole during
the remainder of the tests.
Sows, Gilts Wear More
When Grain Is Limited
Experiments at the University of
Missouri show that sows and gilts will
farrow and wean more pigs by limiting
the amount of grain fed to them, provid-
ed adequate amounts of proteins, vita-
mins, and minerals are supplied.
The limited fed sows in the Missouri
studies received from one-half to two-
thirds as much corn as the sows on nor-
mal feed,
Actual consumption was two to three
pounds of corn per head each day for
the limited fed group, compared with
four to five pounds for the normally fed
group. The limited few sows and gilts
farrowed an average of 8 percent more
pigs and weaned 22 percent more pigs
than those on normal rations.
The Missouri researchers point out,
however, that pigs from the normally
fed sows and gilts averaged three pounds
heavier at weaning time.
