far off the road. Others are make-
road surface. The front end of the box
should be approximately even with the
street side of the curb.
In many localities FFA groups spon-
sor mail box programs in the vocational
agriculture departments of their high
schools, Several 4-H groups have also
participated in this program. The pro-
jects give the class something construc-
tive on which to work in school, and the
bright blue, gold and white supports are
a source of pride. The boxes are no more
expensive for the purchaser than others
and are serviceable and appropriate.
Many civic groups, in addition, in-
clude the mail box in their community
improvement programs. Maintenance of
~a suitable mail box, however, is an in-
dividual responsibility.
The Post Office Department has set
up a schedule for your carrier, which in-
cludes only 20 seconds to serve each box.
Put yourself in your carriers position
put mail in and take mail from your box
while in your carand give yourself the
20-second test.
His schedule is based on the assump-
tion that all boxes are properly erected
and all mail will be stamped.
Talk to your carrier. He will be glad
to advise you and answer your questions.
He is your friend and wants to give you
the best of service. He can, with your
cooperation.
FARM SAFETY WEEK
OBSERVED IN JULY
National Farm Safety Week the
17th annual celebrationwill be observ-
ed throughout the country July 24-30.
Proclaimed by President Eisenhower,
the special week has as its theme Enjoy
Farm LifePractice Safety. It is co-
sponsored by the National Safety Coun-
cil and the U. S. Department of Agricul-
ture.
Purpose of the week devoted to farm
safety is to focus nationwide attention on
the year-around need for reduction of
farm accidents, which cause death, dis-
ability, and grief to farm people and
drain the nations economy.
Buy Health Supplies
With Extreme Caution
.Georgia farmers are urged to use care
in the purchase of livestock and animal
health supplies through retail outlets.
Frequently, medication sold over the
counter may be too old to be affective,
may have lost its value because of in-
adequate storage or may have been of
inferior quality to begin with.
Many farmers try to hold down live-
stock medication expenses by treating
sick or injured animals themselves, but
in doing so they should realize that they _
are taking chances. The chances of fail-
ure are increased when a farmer buys
medical preparations of inferior quality
or those that have lost their value due
to age or other conditions.
When purchasing medical supplies,
farmers should check the expiration date
printed on the container: Do not use med-
icine after its expiration date. Check, al-
so, to be sure the preparation is properly
sealed. :
Farmers are reminded that competent
medical advice and assistance in meeting
livestock health problems are available
cnly from graduate veterinarians.
