and trade for transportation. For this

reason, a joint federdl-state quarantine is

included in the eradication program.
Farm products, soil, machinery and arti-
cles capable of carrying or harboring
this insect are regulated by the quaran-
tine.

The process of eradication, treating
the soil with insecticides Heptachlor and

_Dieldrin, is an expensive and sometimes

lengthy operation. However, now that
funds have been appropriated for this
purpose and the new insecticides are
available, Georgians can look forward to
the day when we will be completely free
of the white-fringed beetle.

Georgia farmers can help state and.

federal entomologists in this work by
reporting any unusual damage to crops.

FEEDING OF SOWS

For a week after farrowing, a sow
should be fed one of the bulky farrowing
rations containing bran, say animal hus-
bandmen, Agricultural Extension Ser-
vice. By the end of the second week, sows
should have full access to a. self-feeder
containing corn and supplement.

ASC Commitfeeman
Election By Mail

The election of community Agricul-
tural Stabilization and Conservation com-
mitteemen in Georgia will be conducted
by mail ballot this year, according to an
announcement this -week by John F.

Bradley, Administrative Officer of the s
Agricultural Stabilization and Conserva- ot

tion State Office in Athens, Georgia.

The period for voting in the com-

munity elections will be from August 3

through August 15. The county conven> _
tions to elect the county ASC commit-

tees will be held on August 30 in each
county.

Farmers in each community will elect
a committee consisting of a chairman,
vice-chairman, and regular member. In
addition, first and second alternates will
be elected in each community. The com-

Inunity committee chairmen will also be

the community delegates to the county
conventions.. A county ASC committee
for each county consisting of a chairman,
vice-chairman, regular member, and two
alternates will be elected at the county
convention.

Voting for community committeemen |
~ will be done by mail, with the county

ASC office sending a secret ballot and a
return envelope to every eligible voter
on its records. The ballots will be mailed
by August 5, Bradley stated. The Feder-
al governments Agricultural Conserva-
tion Program, Price Support, Allotment
and Marketing Quota, and Soil Bank
Program, are administered by the coun-
ty and community ASC committees.
Members of these committees are elected
for 1-year terms, and will take office
September 1.

MORE PIG PARLORS

In Georgia, more and more farmers
are fattening hogs for market in close
confinement in concrete floored pens call-
ed pig parlors, report animal husband-
men, Agricultural Extension Service. It
is estimated there are 2,000 to 4,000 of
these pig parlors in Georgia now, as
compared to practically none five years
ago,
