It would be difficult to estimate the
thousands of dollars wasted each year
in this state through payment to fly-
by-night pest control operators. Your co-
operation, though, can help stamp cut
this problem.
Although termites are present and
work year around, spring termite swarms
focus attention on these destructive pests
at this particular time of the year.
_ Winged termites, often erroneously
called flying ants, may be the first
warning to property owners that termites:
may be attacking their house and such
warnings should not be ignored, Each
year in this country termites cause an
estimated 100 million dollars damage.
This figure does not reflect the addition-
al millions expended annually to prevent
even more damage. In Georgia last year
an estimated $2,848,600 was spent on
termite eradication and control.

Bulletin Tells How
To Attract Wild Ducks
Helping farmers in the South attract s
more wild ducks to agricultural land by
farming for wildlife is the theme of a _
bulletin just released by
new farmers
the U. 8. Department of Agriculture.
The new _ publication, Managing
Farm Fields, Wetlands, and Waters for
Wild Ducks in the South, was written
by Verne E. Davison, Athens, Georgia, i
and William W. Neely, Walterboro, S: C.,
biologists for USDAs Soil Conservation
Service.
The authors state that farmers who
have some wetland or some land they
can flood may attract wild ducks but
they will not be able to keep them unless
the ducks find an ample supply of the ;
food they like. The bulletin describes
how farmers can manage food. plants,
water level, and other conditions to at-
tract ducks 1 a winter home.
Land use practices to encourage
ducks, geese, and other wildlife are re-
ceiving increasing attention in watershed
protection and flood prevention programs.
SCS biologists and engineers are design-
ing water control structures for use in~
dams and dikes so that conditions favor-
able for waterfowl may be maintained.
A free copy of Managing Farm
Fields, Wetlands, and Waters for
wild Ducks in the South, Farmers Bul-
letin No. 2144, may be obtained from the
