57 Nutrena Feeds Now
OK For Sale In State
Nutrena Mills Inc., of Minneapolis,
Minn., has been cleared to sell some 57
different livestock and poultry feeds in
_ Georgia.
An additional 23 Nutrena feeds are
now being checked to determine whether
or not they meet the manufacturers
guarantee as to ingredients listed on the
~ label.
Microscopic examination of several
Nutrena feeds a few weeks ago revealed
that six of the feeds did not include in-
gredients listed on the label. The dis-
covery resulted in the suspension of Nu-
trenas license to do business in Georgia
until the feeds could be checked to de-
termine labeling as to ingredients.
TRACE ELEMENTS
Trace elements essential for plant
growth are: copper, manganese, boron,
iron, zinc, and molybdenum, say agrono-
_ mnists, Agricultural Extension Service.
These elements are necessary for plant
growth, but are required in much smaller
amounts than other elements.

New Planting Methods
Will Be Demonstrated
A series of meetings for showing im-
proved planting methods that will save _
time and money will be held for Geor-
_ gia farmers in March, according to C. W.
Chapman, State Conservationist, Soil
Conservation Service, Athens.
J. T. McAllister, Soil Conservation
Service Equipment Engineer, Orange-
burg, S. C., who has done much to de=-
velop the new technique will supervise
the demonstrations,
Corn willbe planted in stubble or resi-
due from previous crops, or in winter- -COV- |
er or grazing crops, without prior land pre-
paration, A rotary disk lister-planter with
hard ground opener will be used.
The saving of land preparation costs
and getting crops planted on time are
important in lowering production costs,
Chapman said. The new equipment can
be used to plant soybeans, sorghum, and
millet directly into small grain stubble
after combining.
With this method, called mulch tillage,
plant residues can be kept on the surface
of the soil. This mulch is beneficial in sav-
ing moisture during dry periods and de-
laying weed growth. As the mulch decays
organic matter is added to the soil, and
soil condition is improved. Burning of
crop residues is not necessary when this
method of planting is used.
With the elimination of the prepara-
tory practice of burning, plowing, har-
rowing, and disking, farmers can plant
crops at the most opportune time, The
mulch cover left by previous crops or
weed and grass growth is retained to
give maximum protection to the soil.
Dates and locations for the demonstra-
tions are: Mar.1, Moultrie; Mar.2, Val-
dosta; Mar. 3, Tifton; Mar. 15, Metter; Mar,
17, Waynesboro; Mar. 29, Homerville, and
Mar. 31, Lyons. Farm locations andthe
hours during whichthe demonstrations
will beheld willbe announced by local
SCS offices. Farm equipment dealers will
be asked to participate.
The practice is being widely accepted
by soil conservation district cooperators
in the coastal plains area of the State.
