- Food Scares Pose New
__ Threat To Agriculture

_ Agriculture in general seems to be
faced with an increasingly complex pro-
blem as a result of the use of chemicals
in the production of crops and livestock.
Recent actions of the Secretary of
Health, Education and Welfare would
indicate that this supposedly respon-
sible Department of the U. S. Govern-
ment may, at any time, come out with
some frightening charges pertaining to
the use of such products.

None knows when or where the
next blow may fall but it is reasonable
to assume, in the light of past events,
that such action may come without no-
fice and without thought as to the ec-
Onomic damage that may result for
Some specific phase of agriculture.
The cranberry scare and the charg-
es originating from the U. S. Depart-
ment of Health, Education and Welfare
at that time were prime examples of
the totally irresponsible thinking of
those people.
Certainly such action constituted a
method of law enforcement that is so
harmful and unnecessary as to be ab-
surd..

Without consulting the U. S. De-
partment of Agriculture or the cran-
berry industry itself, the U. S. Depart-
ment of Health, Education and Welfare
frightened people everywhere by lead-
ing them to believe they would devel-
op cancer if they should eat cran-
berries for Thanksgiving.

Nothing could have been further
from the truth. Scientists pointed out
that for persons to become ill they
would have to consume thousands of
pounds of the treated cranberries. Even
the American Medical Journal, t h e
foremost and most authoritative publi-
cation of its kind, ridiculed the idea
completely in a statement pointing out
that the chemical, aminotriazole, oc-
curs naturally by nature in such crops

Two Feed Additives
Aid Egg Production

Two feed additives, when combin-
ed, increased egg production and feed ef-
ficlency more than either additive alone
in trials at the South Dakota Experi-
ment Station, Poultryman C. W. Carl-
son reported to the Poultry Science As-
sociation meeting at Iowa State Uni-
versity recently.

Both oxytetra - cycline (an anti-
biotic) and glucosamine (which is sup-
posed to improve effects of antibiotics)
increased feed efficiency and egg pro-
duction in Leghorn pullets. However,
greater improvement was noted when
the additives were combined, Carlson
said.
