Department To Check
Bulk Feed, Fertilizer

The Georgia Department of Agricul-

ire will check weights and make chemi-
al analysis of bulk feed and bulk fertili-

er delivered to Georgia farmers during

coming year.

In the past these two products have
een checked mostly in bags but due to

1e increasing use of both feed and fer- |

lizer in bulk form, it is felt necessary
t the Department expand its activities
io include this new form of sale and de-
very.
All such bulk deliveries to the. farm
e supposed to be accompanied by a sales
eket or delivery ticket showing both
reight and manufacturers guarantee as
analysis.
In the Departments expanded opera-
during the coming year, trucks mak-
bulk deliveries will be stopped and
ghed and samples of the load will be
ained for analysis in Department lab-

Research Report
New Anti-Coccidiosis
Drugs Are Tested

Recent experiments at Beltsville, Md.,
show that two new drugs, glycarbylamide

and nicarbazin, are more effective against.

cecal disease.

The other compounds used in the ex-

periments were nitrofurazone, Bifuran, |

sulfaquinoxaline, and Trithiadol.

None of the nicarbazine-medicated
birds used in the Beltsville experiments
died, and mortality was less than 5 per
cent among birds treated with nitrofura-
zone, glycarbylamide, or Bifuran. Mor-
-unmedicated birds

The recent experiments also show that

only those birds fed glycarbylamide-
medicated mash made better weight gains
than the controls. This suggests a primary
growth-promoting property in this com-
pound, but further testing, the Beltsville
poultry scientists say, will be required be-

fore this finding can be substantiated.

NUMBER a

TESTED
Rain May Have Caused
Drop In Germination

Georgia farmers who have saved their

own cotton seed for planting next spring
should have a germination test made on
these seed before uelog them for planting
purposes.

Due to the large amount of rain this _

fall, many of the cotton seed which have |
been saved in Georgia are going to be un-_

fit for planting. The only way farmerscan

be assured of getting a stand with their
own seed next spring is to have the seed

tested and adjust their planting rate ac-

cording to the germination of their seed.

Farmers may have their seed tested
by mailing a sample to the State Seed
Laboratory, Georgia Department of Ag-

che

riculture, 19 Hunter Street, S. W., At- oo

lanta 3, Georgia.

In taking a sample from seed that lox ae i
been stored in bags, farmers should take __

a handful of seed from near the center of
every third or fourth bag, mix the seed

together well and then send about a one-
pound coffee can full of this mixture to.

the seed laboratory.

In taking a sample from seed in bulk, : a
farmers should take a handful of seed eS ae

from seven or eight uniformly distribut-

ed parts of the lot, mix the different sam- _
-ples together well and send about a one-

pound coffee can full to the seed labora-
tory.

All seed samples sent ie the jaborae

tory for testing should include the name

of the kind and variety, lot number, and

the name and full address of the sender.
The name and address of the sender should

be on the inside and outside of the pack-
age.

The value of Georgias 12 principal oo

fresh market and processing vegetable
crops and melons in 1959 was $14,800,000,
an increase of 25 percent from the 1958

value of $11,855,000. The increase was
due mainly to higher prices received for
most major grown vegetable and melon
crops compared with last year. Water-
melons accounted for 30.5 percent of ee:

total value.
