otton growers and processors can
toward the apparel industry as an
ding outlet for their product, ac-
ce. Each year for the past 10 years,
consumption of apparel has increas-
tton has increased its share of this
et.
om a low of 56 percent in 1947, cot-
ad by 1957 brought its share up to
reent. This consistent post-war in-
@ in the use of cotton for apparel
ns shows that in this area it has suc-
lly met the competition of other fi-
even more optimistic picture ap-
when one looks at actual cotton con-
tion figures. Compared with 10 years
he apparel industry has increased its
cotton by 45 percentfrom 2,678,-
913,000 bales.
mption of the household market,
nore than offsets a rather large loss
dustrial market. On the whole, 5
more cotton was used for manu-
in 1957 than in 1947.
1 growth in the apparel industry
e past decade has been accom-
by increasing expenditures for
due to population growth.
1957, consumers spent $19.5 billion
yparel compared with $16.1 billion 10
earlier. But the average person
Apparel Industry
ng to the Agricultural Marketing
gether with the 10 percent larger
ing. However, this increase was
spent only $2 more for clothing 1957 than
in 1947. These figures are real dollars,
which eliminate the effect of price chang-
es. :
The increase in spending on apparel
has been much less than the rise in in-
come. As annual earnings have gone up,
a large proportion of expenditures have
- gone for services, luxuries, and durable
goods. ie
It is well known that much more mon-
ey is spent on womens and childrens
clothes than on mens wear, Statistics for
both 1947 and 1957 show that 44 percent
- more goes for womens and childrens ap-
parel than for mens and boys.
This is important to the cotton indu-
stry because women and children under 5
years of age make up 56 percent of our
countrys population. And, as a group,
they are increasing faster than men and
boys.
Economists who seek the answer to
cottons future in the apparel industry
must consider all these things. With such
information, they can project what the
cotton-apparel situation will be in the
years ahead. | a
_. For example, they estimate that our
countrys total real
disposable income
should reach $600 billion by 1975or,
double that of 1957. The population could
reach 235 million, 64 million more than in
1957.
Further, if the proportion of income
spent on apparel continues to decline as it
did between 1947 and 1957, expenditures
in 1975 will average only 5.7 cents of each
dollar spent, But with a greater number
of dollars being spent, the annual per ca-
pita out-lay for womens and childrens
clothing would be $166 (compared to $138
1957). |
Not so easily projected is the competi-
tion cotton will meet in the apparel in- :
NUMBER 1
Jowers New Chief
Of FHA For Georgia
Pleasant L. Jowers, a farmer of Wray,
Ga., is the new state director of the Farm-
ers Home Administration. 7 ee
The appointment of Mr. Jowers to the
state directors post was effective in Au-
gust. S. L. Van Landingham, who had
been serving as acting director since the
retirement of R. L. Vansant, has resumed
his duties as chief of program operations.

nuts, cattle and hogs. A graduate of Abra-

culture, Mr. Jowers served as county

today) and mens and boys clothing will
total $117 a year (compared to $95 in
dustry from the other fibers. However,
between 1951 and 1957 when interfiber
competition was severe, annual per capita.
consumption of cotton rose nearly 2 per-
cent. If price.and price relationships re-
main unchanged, this rate of increase .
probably will continue.
Taking all these factors into considera-
tion, economists estimate that the apparel
industry will require 7.3 million bales of:
cotton in 1975almost twice as much as
in 1957.
