University Studies Effect
Of Heredity In Chickens

A recent report from Colorado State

- University says that poultry scientists

there are conducting research to deter-

mine the effect of heredity on the ability
of chickens to utilize feed.

If heredity is found to be a factor,

_then the family background of a laying
_ hen may some day determine sherties of

diet she should have.

Thus the purposes of the Colorado re-
search are to: (1) Evaluate the reproduc-
tive performance of laying hens on the
basis of their nutritional requirements;
and (2) determine the relationship of their
genetic background to these requirements.

half weeks. To turn out 5,000 broilers to
-same age, it only takes 275 hours 70
more. Put another way, it took three hours
per day to take care of 1,000 broilers. Add

just 1 hour and 10 minutes a day (total,
4 hours and 10 minutes) and you can
handle 5,000 broilers. Already these hours
have been cut by faster growing chicks,
bigger houses, and automatic equipment.
There is this important point also: To

se care for only 5,000 to 6,000 broilers takes

only a part of a day. So, farm manage-

ment specialists, on basis of what many

broilermen are now doing-have developed

the recommendation on page 8 for broil-

ers. Recommendations for various enter-

prises are based on Southern farm studies
of what farmers are actually doing.

HIGH-PRODUCING ANIMALS

Texas A. and M. College animal hus."
bandmen point out that just to break even
your beef cow herd will need to average
an 80 percent calf crop weighing 400

_ pounds at weaningtime. Cow herds that

dont make this goal are fighting a losing

battle, because the only hope for a profit
is a continued high market. And there is

no such guarantee.

DHIA figures show you only gt $15
per head net profit per year on a cow

_ producing 5,000 pounds of milk. Profit

per cow zooms up to $93 on a 9,000-pound
cow. and $116 on an 11,000-pound milk
cow. Or take the example used in opening
of article. A man milking a 500-pound
butterfat cow would get about $3.30 an

hour for his work, compared to only 3-
cents an hour for the dairymen with the

150-pound cow.
MORE POUNDS ON LESS FEED

Recent research shows that a hen
weighing over 5 pounds needs 5.33
pounds of feed to produce a pound of
eggs. Small hens-at same rate of lay
needed only 3.2 pounds of feed to produce
a pound of eggs. With feed at 5 cents per
pound, itcost over 10 cents more for a big
hen to turn out a pound of eggs than it
did the smaller hen. Incidentally, we may
soon come to the time when well sell eggs
by the pound instead of by the dozen. The
feed efficiency story of broilers is well
known. x
