Georgia Milk Producers Ine,
few years ago, milk production in
a was not sufficient to meet de-
on a year round basis. Under these
ditions the one year base worked well,
it today that situation has reversed and
n which wore out the usefulness of
2 one year base. As a result, the three
ar base became a part of the Georgia
of 1958.
m means of keeping production in line
men and it is fair to all of us, With-
our three year base we would be
ught i in the vicious cycle of over produc-
cle would be continuous with decreasing
ices resulting in greater production and
on a three year plan we can maintain a
erage price for milk.
y milk base is actually just a ea
llotting the proper share of a plants
payroll to each producer. Although
18 possible that no immediate benefits
ll be felt, we know that this is protec-
or our future. Certainly the man who
been in the business for years can
sily see the need for this protection.
some examples of how the three year
e stabilizes production thereby pre-
nting severe price fluctuations, are as
lows:
Example I: Suppose the first year you
ed 1,000 lbs. per day during the base
ng period; the second year you ship-
000 lbs. per day, and the third year
shipped 2,000 lbs. per day. This is a
increase when all conditions are fa-

and the resulting bad effects. This

drop the first years production, add the
fourth years production and divide by 3.
Example Il: Now suppose the above
situation were altered as a result of a
drought or other disaster. First year you
ship 1,000 lbs. and your base equals 1,000
Ibs. Second year you ship 1,500 lbs, and
your base equals 1,167 lbs. Third year
there is a disaster and you only ship 500
Ibs. Your third year base would then be
1,000 plus 1,500 plus 500 Ibs. equals 3,000.
divided by 3 equals 1,000 lbs. daily.
Because of your misfortune, your base
in the third year is lower than in the sec-
ond year. On a one year plan, however, it
would be extremely difficult and in many
instances impossible. |
Although no example is shown, the.
man who does not increase can always be
sure of his fair and proportionate share of
the market on a three year plan, On a
one year plan, it is possible for him to lose
a percentage of his higher priced utiliza-
tion each year if other producers increased
beyond fluid milk sales.
Clean Out Fertilizer
Equipment Carefully
Within the past few months there have .
been several cases of severe damage to
- cotton fields by the apparent use of con-
- taminated liquid fertilizer spreader equip-
ment. - |
_ A few persons have attempted to use
the same equipment for pasture weed
control and liquid fertilizer applications.
' 2. 4-D is very difficult to remove com-
pletely from fertilizer spreader equipment
and as little as one part per million in
spray or liquid fertilizer will affect cotton
growth.
Wherever and whenever possible the
same equipment should not be used for
weed killers and crop sprays or fertilizers.
If such equipment must be used for both,
every precaution should be taken to pro-
perly clean it.
In cleaning such. cept use gen-
-erous amounts of TSP (trisodium phos-
phate) in the wash water and soak for some
time. Be sure to wash down the outside
of the equipment a as well as the inside.
Don't Stop Killing,
Boll Weevils Now.
Although the cotton growing season is
pretty far along in some areas of the stata -
this is no time for farmers to slow down
in their fight against the boll weevil.
- Recent checks in South Georgia cot- ; ae 2
ton fields revealed an increase in the per-
centage of punctured squares. Migration ~
is underway in South Georgia in large
numbers and this explains the pEcsence of ~ |
many weevils in blooms.
Applications of insecticide should defi-
nitely be continued for boll protection
until the young bolls are at least three
weeks old. Use maximum recommended
amounts of insecticides at 4-day intervalg s_>
where weevil infestations are heavy and pee
where migration is occurring.
In releasing this advice the Agricul- !
tural Extension Service says that while
bollworms are not a serious problem at
present some fields have damaging infes-
tations and plants should be checked fre+
quently because this pest can infest fields
almost overnight.
The Extension Service Greed farmers
not to stop weevil control measures just
because cotton has stopped blooming. Ac-
cording to Extension Entomologist more
insect damage to cotton is caused late in
the season than at any other time and
Georgia farmers should stop donating one-
half bale or more per acre to insects late
in the season for the lack of a few more S
applications of insecticide,
