Gene Ackerman, marketing specialist
the Department has just returned
aa lengthy trip during which he vis-
| produce buyers in some 10 northern

sale of Georgia produce.

As a whole, out of state produce deal-
s are interested in buying Georgia fruits
ad vegetables in Georgia. Most of the
icism has come from out-of-state buy-
who purchased from Georgia in the
nd got stung on quality.

Most of these buyers who have refused
uy from Georgia in the past because
r quality have expressed a great deal
nterest in the relatively new cull law
uality programs that have been in-
ted on all state farm markets.

n. addition to familiarizing out-of-
e produce dealers with our states new
lity programs, the visits allow Depart-
it marketing officials to find out just
t out-of-state buyers and dealers want
way of fruits and vegetables.

Department marketing specialists have
ered that a lot of squash is consum-
and down the eastern seaboard and
la produce growers have an ex-
t opportunity to produce for this big

e Luchinni, straight and crook neck
squash. Department marketing
lalists also discovered that the people
New York City dont eat pole beans but
at some varieties of snap beans.

_ Another interesting thing Department
harketing specialists have found out per-
0 watermelons. Many of the north-

Mexico and pay five to ten times
e for them than to buy from the

eastern states. These dealers insist
at farmers of the Southeast push their
elons too fast with improper fertiliza-
Practices and as a result the melons
not as good as the melons from Mex-
which are allowed to develop more

slowly. Undoubtedly many melon grow-_

ers are going to have to produce what the

_ buyer wants if they hope to move their

melons at a profit.

Wherever Department marke tin g
officials visit the emphasis is on quality.
Not only quality of product, but quality in
the manner in which the product is pack-
ed, shipped and offered to the buyer. Clean

containers were found to be all important |
in moving fresh produce through north- |

ern markets. No matter how good the

_ quality of the product offered, a dirty

container distracts from the quality and
vitally affects the eye appeal of the
product.

Basically, Department ee of-
ficials have found that Georgia produce

growers MUST produce and market only -

quality fruits and vegetables in clean, at-

tractive containers if they hope to reach

the out-of-state markets. In addition,
Georgia producers should contact their
market managers and find out what var-
ieties sell best and produce those varieties
that are in demand.

At best the production of fresh fruits
and vegetables for market constitutes a
gamble, Suecess depends not only on cli-
matic conditions but market conditions at
time of harvest. These same conditions in
another state hundreds of miles from
Georgia can vitally affect the Georgia pro-

The farmer who refuses to produce and
market quality is taking an even bigger

- gamble. He may not be able to sell his

products even if market conditions are

ideal and there is a demand for such pro-

ducts.

Feeder Pig Sales
Show Good Quality

The two feeder pig sales held at Coch- |

ey

ran during the last two months were very <=

successful. The number of pigs sold has
not been too high but the quality has been _
good. The first sale, March 31, sold 534

head of graded pigs averaging 64. 8 pounds : ee

for an average price of ee 88 per cwt. for
all pigs.

The next sale, April 28, a 044 grad
ed pigs. The average weight per pig was
71.31 pounds with an average price per
ewt of $20.30. The pigs weighing 60
pounds or less brought from $18.00 to
$31.00, most between $22.00. and $27.50.
The pigs between weights of 60:pounds
and 80 pounds brought $17.00 to $25.00
most between $20.00 and $22.50. The 80
to 100 pound pigs brought $17.70 to $20.00, .
and the 100 to 120 pound weights brought
$17.00 to $19.75.

As can be determined from these pri-
ces, these two sales -have been in favor
of the producer. Another feeder pig sale

is planned for Monday, June 1, with a a

graded market hog sale on June 2.

The first graded market hog sale in ee |

Georgia was held at Cochran on April 29,

The hogs were graded and weighed as they

were unloaded and ee sold on that
weight.

The sale consisted of 182 graded hogs

weighing from 180 to 240 pounds (graded Ce
into U.S. No. 1, 2, and 3) averaging 209.2

pounds with an average price of $16.43 per
cwt. This price included the pens of US.
No, 1s, 2s and 3s with the No. ls going
up to $17. 40 on 29 head and the 3s Bona
down to $16.00 on 18 head. | |

In the Arkansas experiments, in which >

1,500 male and 1,500 female birds were
