ni Or hone,
- Satisfactory Methods
By DR. S. C. SCHMITTLE
rector, Pouliry Disease Research Center
University of Georgia
Dead chickens are a dangerous source
the spread of diseases, either to birds
the same house, to other flocks on the
m or to future flocks in the same house.
Dead birds should be disposed of daily
iether due to normal mortality or a se-
us disease problem.
Ifa few birds are dying they should be
pmitted to a diagnostic laboratory along
th sick ones to determine the cause in
der to control the losses. If losses con-
ue, the dead birds should be disposed
each day on the farm in one of the fol-
ing ways.
(1) Bury them deeply on some part of
e farm away from your flocks or your
ighbors. They should be covered each
y and buried sufficiently deep so as not
attract dogs or other animals. The easi-
; method for dead bird management is
th a disposal pit sufficiently constructed
* that purpose. For normal losses a pit
hould be 150 cubic feet for each 1,000
irds in the flock. The pit should be cover-
with a concrete slab provided with an
ening with a tight cover. An ideal ar-
ngement is to have two pits. When one
comes filled, use the other one while the
rds are decomposing in the first one.
fore building a pit, consult your county
ent for plans.
(2) Complete burning. The most effec-
fe way to burn birds is in a fuel fired
cinerator. This can be constructed from
99 gallon steel drum. Pouring oil or ker-
actory as the fire should be under the
rds. Daily burning may be satisfactory
losses are not excessive.
The danger of dead birds as a source of
disease spread can not be over emphasiz-
ad d. Proper disposal is an important part
ot f poultry flock management,

Answers Tei Your Questions
Farm fos ponds i increase in Georgia at
the rate of approximately three thousand
per year. The latest estimate by the State
Game and Fish Commission showed that
there are approximately 40,000 ponds
scattered throughout the state.
Such ponds are multiple assets to farm-
ers. In addition to supplying fishing and
recreation, ponds furnish irrigation facili-
ties, erosion control measures and water
for livestock.
To provide the best fishing possible in
a farm pond, regardless of its size, it is
necessary to properly construct the dam _ |
and carry out a sound program of fish ,
management.
Here are the answers to some of the
most frequently asked questions concern-
ing the construction and management of
farm ponds.
What assistance is available to farm-
ers who wish to construct new ponds? _
Answer: The Soil Conservation Service
offers help and advice in the construction
of ponds. An SCS agent will test the soil
type and watershed and help landowners
choose a suitable location.
Are there any special things to re-
member when constructing a pond?
Answer: the USDA will supervise ma-
jor problems of construction. However,
each pond builder should insist on the re-
moval of brush, trees and debris. Also, it
is important that the edges of a pond be
cut approximately two feet deep to eli-
minate shallow water. This is necessary in
order to eliminate weed growth.
What ae of fish are best to stock in
farm ponds?
Answer: Years of research and obser-
vation have proven that largemouth bass
and bluegill bream are the most compata-
ble combination. Bass should be stocked
in the spring following the stocking of
On Fish Pond Management
bream in the fall, at the rate of 100 bass
and 1,000 bream per surface acre. Shell-
crackers may be substituted for 20 per.
cent of the bluegill if preferred.
What type of fertilizer is best for
ponds?
Answer: 8-8-2 applied at 100 pounds
per acre and 20-20-5 applied at 40 pounds
_ per acre will give best results,
When should the fertilizer be applied?
Answer: First application should be
made in the spring, usually around the
tirst two weeks in March, and continue
until October. The average pond will re-
quire about ten anplications per year.
Should a nond be fished the first year :
after stockinc? -
Answer: No pond should be fished un-
til the bass spawn, which is usually arouae
one year after stocking.
Virhat can be done about weeds in a
pond?
Answer: Ponds with weed nreblenss
should be checked by fishery biologists
from the State Game and Fish Commis-
sion. Chemical treatment is often recom-
mended to eliminate ponds but proper
knowledge of the chemical and the rate of
application is necessary. It is not wise to
undertake such treatment without a
sulting a fishery biologist.
Mrct ponds be dr-ined and restocked
every five years to have good fishing?
Answer: No. If a pond is properly con-
structed, stocked and managed, it will
supply good fishing for an indefinite num-_
ber of years.
Whst havvens to shellcracker fishing
in pons several years old?
Answer: Shellerackers cross with blue-
gills and produce a hybrid fish that does
not spawn, Therefore, shellcracker fish-
ing tends to fade out.
