lant Pecan Trees Now
: 10To 25 Pecan Trees
Beneficial To Farmer
: Georgia farm families who do not have
10 to 25 pecan trees planted about the
lace are missing a mighty good thing,
according to R. L. Livingston, Horticul- _
urist, Agricultural Extension Service.
A home grove of good bearing pecan
rees not only supplies the farm family
: with plenty of nuts to eat, but furnishes an
additional source of family income, de-
p pending upon the amount and quality of
pecans produced for sale, oe
_ said.
ng trees properly are important in the
establishment of a successful home grove.
At present only four varieties of pecans
are recommended for transplanting in
_ Georgia. These are Desirable, Stuart, Far-
ley and Elliot. Trees should be transplant-
ed as early as possible from the present
date on, Livingston said.
_ He recommends planting at least three
varieties in a grove or around the house.

If the grower has no intentions of
thinning the trees once they are crowd-
ing each other he should plant a minimum
80 by 80 foot basis. If the grower will def-
hey should be planted on a 60 by 60 foot
basis. Thinning on this basis usually will
be necessary by a time the trees are 25

There is some evidence that cross-polli-.
lation increases the yield of pecans. In a
commercial grove each of the three dif- |

Most pecan groves can be planted suc-
ston said, since the groves should be in a.
cover crop both winter and summer to
prevent erosion of the soil. Normally this

Certain Features Of Bill u
Aid Ga. Cotton Farmer
The 1958 Farm Law passed by Cone -
gress last year has certain features con- fe
cerning cotton beneficial to Georgia cot- _
by Senator Herman Talmadge. = ,_~
There are three important factors in
this bill which Georgia farmers should _
keep in mind while planning their cotton S
acreage for the coming Year: eee
First, the bill insures that the cotton, 4
farmer whose acreage allotment is already -
10 acres or less will not have a cut in his ~
allotment. For example, if you now are
planting more than 10 acres of cotton, the
be cut below 10 acres. Or, if you now are
planting less than 10 acres, yods allotment: =
will not be cut at all. | :
With many farmers facing heavy allot- ae
ment reductions, this legislation prevents
cuts in the small farmers acreage and in- _
sures him of at least enough acreage to ae
Second, this bill prevents acreage A
lotment not planted by a farmer in one
county or turned back to the state, if any- _
one in that county wants to plant the Une
used allotment.
This same oe holds fru ie the 2
state. If a farmer in Georgia does not wish
to plant all of his allotted acreage, other
Georgia farmers will be given the privi-
Bet
going to a farmer in another state. |
Third, in view of the second. provision
to plant all of his cotton allotment should
turn that allotment back to the County
ASC. Committee as soon as possible so it
will not be lost but can be turned over to z
his allotted acreage.
Farmers who do want to plant more
should keep in touch with county ASC of- _
ed over to the county from a tee not
wishing to plant his full allotment. :
