Poultry Convention
Eyes Turkey Talks

A battery of imminent experts will
appear on the Turkey Program at the
Southeastern Poultry and Egg Associa-
tions Twelfth Annual Convention and
Trade Show in Atlanta, January 26-28.

The Turkey Program, scheduled for
Tuesday, January 27, will bring together
several nationally prominent spokesmen
specializing in various fields within the
industry, said Southeasterns President
Paul G. Thomas, Sumter, S. C.

Dr. C. K. Laurent of Augusta, Ga.,
will speak. He has played an important
role in the Southeastern Associations va-
rious development and educational pro-
grams as well as its annual convention.
The former head of the University of
Georgia Poultry Department will point
out means of Taking Advantage of Op-
portunities in Turkey Production in the
Southeast.

allows the broilers to be caught with a
minimum of disturbance as they are par-
tially blind in the blue light. Using a
colored light will slow down the catching
process and some processors wonder if it
can be justified from an economic stand-
point. Use extreme care to prevent pile
ups as dead birds at this stage bring no
returns what-so-ever.

Most of the broilers in Georgia are
caught in a pen made of chicken coops.
Possibly a net could be used to a very good

New Disease Resistant

Forage Oat Announced

A new disease-resistant forage oat for
South Georgia, AB-110, has been develop-
ed by the Georgia Coastal Plain Experi-
ment Station, the Florida Experiment Sta-
tion, and the Crops Research Division of
the U. S. Department of Agriculture.

Harvey C. Lowery, seed marketing
specialist, Agricultural Extension Ser-
vice, said it is hoped the new variety will
be a satisfactory replacement for South-
land which has become highly suscepti-
ble to crown rust and other diseases.

According to Lowery, the AB-110 va-
riety has the rapid growth and vigor of
Southland, plus added resistance to crown
and stem rust (except races 264 and 276).
It produces an abundance of early forage
in the fall and, if not damaged by cold
weather, will produce large amounts of
forage throughout the grazing season. AB-
110 is a tall-growing variety and may
lodge some at harvest time unless it is
carefully managed by proper grazing.

It is believed to be as cold-hardy as
Southland, but it is recommended only in
the southern Coastal Plain area. Tem-
peratures of 18 degrees or lower will dam-
age the stands, especially after heavy
grazing. The grain is plump and yellow.
It has few awns or hairs and is of high
quality for feeding purposes.

advantage in the catching process. This
would eliminate a hard object that could
cause bruises. 5

The birds should be carried from
house and placed in coops on the truck.
The fewer times the broilers are caught
or handled the fewer the bruises. Many
broiler growers insist on farm weights and
this necessitates catching and placing the
birds in the coop, weighing the coops and.
chickens and then placing on the truck.
Special care should be given to putting
the birds in and removing them from the
coops. Some loaders actually use their
feet to push the birds in the coops.

Good management on the part of the
grower and common sense handling on
the part of the catching crew, hauler and
processcr will help greatly to keep costs
down. -
