Annual Insect Damage
In Georgia; $100 Million
Lost: One Hundred Million Dollars.
This is the amount lost each year by
_ Georgians to insect damage alone. It is
also the title of a new leaflet written by
Dr. C; R. Jordan, Agricultural Extension
Service entomologist.
In the past, Georgia farmers have lost.
the equivalent of 330,000 acres of cotton
to insect damage each yearan average
loss of about 33,000,000 spend Jordan

Dr. Jordan points out, however, that

Laying Rate Not Perfect
| Method of Judging Hens
The number of eggs a hen lays in a
fixed period of time may not be a very
accurate indication of her value, a United
| States Department of Agriculture survey
reveals.
Equally important are the various en-
vironmental conditions such as the weath-
er, length of day, temperature, etc., and
the hens previous laying record.
- A hens laying rate tends to drop off
in proportion as time passes, For exam-
ple, compare the December production
record for two flocks of chickens, one of
which began to lay in August and the
other in October. The October flock might
appear to produce eggs at a more rapid
ratebut only because the birds had laid
a shorter period of time. :
The rate a hen lays also depends on
the daily length of light and darkness.
Generally 13 to 14 hours of light a day
are most favorable..Chickens differ, too,
in their response to an increase of light.
Breeders need to find out how envir-
_onmental factors influence egg produc-

Americans Should Drink
More Milk For Health
Most Americans dont drink enough
milk to satisfy proper nutritional require-
ments, says Robert L. Nemcik, Universi-
ty of Illinois.
One quart of milk can give the aver-
age person more than 100 percent of the
calcium he needs, 100 percent of the ri-
boflavin, 66 percent of the phosphorus, 52
percent of the protein, 30 percent of the
vitamin A, 7 percent of the niacin, about
20 percent of the vitamin C and 20 per-
cent of the thiamine.
Milk is a food thats considered an es-
sential part of the diet for every man,
woman, and child.

Certified Seed Use fot
Grassland Increasing
The quantity of grassland seeds
' -ertified in 1953 was nearly four
- times that of 1949, and the per-
eentage of total production in-
creased from 3 percent in 1949 to] %
13 percent in 1953. But this still
leaves some 87 percent uncerti-|%
fied.
With 4 crops the percentage
certified was much higher than]
the averagealfalfa, 33% of 133
million pounds; tall fescue, 56%
of 28 million pounds; perennial
ryegrass, 53% of 17 million
pounds; and Ladino clover, 81% |
of 7 million pounds. With sweet-
clover, crimson clover, brome-
grass and Sudangrass, they were] }
about average or below, and with
timothy, orchardgrass, Kentucky | ;
bluegrass, lespedeza, rd clover,
alsike clover, the vetches, com-
mon ryegrass,
some others, the percentages
were small or negligible.
The extension of certification |
will depend upon such factors as |] *
(a) how rapidly superior varie-
ties will be developed, (b) wheth-
er seed produced as a by-product
of forage will continue to com-
pete successfully with certified
seed and (c) whether for use as
forage or soil improvement cer-
tain named new varieties will be
sufficiently superior to make
them more profitable.
Improvement of grasses and le-
gumes for grasslands will con-
tinue indefinitely and new and
improved varieties will gradual-
ly become available. With some
cro) the performance records
show that it is only through the
use of certified seed of improved
adapted varieties that the maxi-
mum production of the highest
quality forage can be obtained.
- In such cases, certified seed
should be utilized as rapidly as
it becomes available.
The advice use only certified
seed is sometimes given when
the intent is to advise the farm-
er to use the best quality seed
he can buy. Though well-in-
tended, such a sweeping recom-
mendation of certified seed is
not at all realistic and results
in confusion when the buyer is
unable to find certified seed of
some prominent grasses or clo-
winterpeas and|

being grown for seed.
vers. Improved strains of many
grasses and legumes are still to
be developed, or may at present
be only in the trial stage and
not commercially obtainable. Un-
til such new strains and varie-
ties are available, farmers re-
quiring seeds in this group need
have no hesitancy in using un-
certified seed. The important
point is to buy seed of known
origin, seed that has been prop-
erly recleaned, tested and hon-
estly labelled from his reliable
seed dealer.
Summing up, the careful
farmer is advised to use certi-
fied seed of proven superiority
where available, but to remem-
ber that in making good produc-
tive grassland he is not limited
to certified varieties. Whether
the seed is certified or uncerti-
fied, a well-prepared seed-bed,
adequate fertilization and good
cultural practices are necessary
for best results. And whether
certified or uncertified seed is
to be used, make sure that it
is of highest quality, thoroughly
recleaned, laboratory-tested and
properly labelled.
