Granular Form Herbicides
Aid Chemical Weed Control
The use of herbicides in granular form
may permit wider use of chemical weed
control, according to recent experiments
by the USDA. and cooperating state ex-
periment stations,
The researchers have found that gran-
ular herbicides remain in contact with
crop foliage only momentarily before
they reach soil where they are needed to
kill emerging weed seedlings. Since this
brief contact does the foliage little or no
harm, herbicides that are highly injuri-
ous to crops in spray form may, under cer-
tain conditions, be safely used in granu-
- Jar form.
Certain granular preparations: have
been used effectively in cooperative ex-
- periments in Maryland, New Jersey, and
Texas for control of emerging weeds in
such crops as tomatoes, Irish potatoes, and
strawberries, following the last cultiva-
tion.

HERDS
Will Condemn Entire
Herd If Infected
Cattle Are Found
By PHIL CAMPBELL
Commissioner of Agriculture
The Department of Agriculture will
condemn and slaughter all herds of cat-
tle infected with TB and prohibit the
owners from placing livestock on the same _
land for a period of time long enough to |
protect future cattle on the land from tu-
bercular infection. .
During the past three years I have
been quite disturbed about the lingering
cases of tuberculosis which we have had
in a few of our Georgia cattle herds. I =
firmly believe that the safest way to con-.
trol this disease and stamp out any threat
of possible spread of the disease is to con- 2
demn and slaughter allherdsin whichany s
TB infection is found.
_ This new Department of Agriculture ~
policy will also eliminate the continued
expense of testing and indemnity Pave
~ ments.
At the same time, I plan to promialeees
new and stronger regulations that will |
protect Georgia cattlemen when buying
cattle from out of state. To prevent the
import of TB infected cattle we will pro-
hibit the entry of cattle into Georgia un-
less they come from herds known to be
free of the disease.
Georgia is practically free of TB in
cattle but there have been a few persis-
tent herd cases that have necessitated the ~
continued quarantine of these herds and
the continued payment of indemnities.
Accompanying this article are several
actual case history examples of herds in
Georgia infected with tuberculosis. The
record of testing of these herds shows how
easily TB can crop back up in a herd after
it has been checked.
As a rule herd owners have been most
cooperative but despite their efforts to
eradicate the disease as many as 950 per-

~ Modified Brucellosis Free
New J ersey thas become the 13th state
to be declared modified-certified brucel-
losis free by the USDA and is the fourth
_ state to achieve this status in 1958.
This means that not more than one per-
cent of the cattle and not more than five
percent of all herds in the state can be in-
fected with brucellosis.
The other modified-certified brucelle
sis-free states are Utah, Pennsylvania,
Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware,
Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, North
Carolina, Vermont, ashineton; and Wis-
consin.
The total number of doiien Now cer-
tified is 1,179 in 25 states, or about 37 per-
cent of all counties in the United States.
Georgia counties account for more than 50
of this number of counties. It is hoped that
Georgia will be modified-certified bru-
cellosis-free by 1960. :

| Watch for Witchweed lower,
Farmers in corn-producing areas
' should be on the lookout-for tiny red, yel-
low, or almost white flowers of the witch-
weed until the next frost, USDA officials
say. ee
Seeds ripen after flowering from June
until frost. After germination, witchweed
roots penetrate the roots of corn, sugar-
cane, sorghum, some grasses, sedges, and
broadleave plants, robbing them of food
and water. Stunting, wilting, and yellow- |
ing occur, resembling symptoms of |
drought. The parasitic plant has been
found in 17 counties in the States of North
and South Carolina,
quarantine is now in effect under ARS.
Intrastate movements are regulated by
State quarantines.
Since one plant produces as many as
half a million microscopic seeds, pest-
control officials are anxious to find every
patch of the pest. Farmers can help by
reporting all suspicious plants to the con-
trol officials, county agents, or State ex-
periment station for positive identifica-
tion, The plants are seeds should not be
moved from the field until identity is
established, since the minute seeds can be
spread easily.

Beef Cattle Testing C
Operation
Found Beneficial In Virginia
(Reprinted from Agricultural Research)
(Editors note: Governor Marvin
Griffin recently appropriated money
for a beef cattle testing station at the
Coastal Plains Experiment Station,
Tifton. Following is a reprint of an
article on a similar program in Vir-
ginia which should be of interest to
Georgia cattlemen.)
' Virginias beef cattle have earned a
solid reputation for predictability and ex-
cellence, thanks to USDA-State research
and marketing procedures.
Current improvement in the States
cattle is being made through a statewide
record-of-performance (ROP) testing pro-
pram by the recently organized Virginia
Beef Cattle Improvement Association. Its
work is based almost entirely on research
results from several years of beef testing
at the Beef Cattle Research Station, Front
Royal, Va.
Researchers there hhave found that a
bulls early performance record is useful
in predicting similar performance (rate
ot gain, conformation to good carcass type,
- and feed-use efficiency) in his offspring.
No longer need a breeder wait until a bull
is 2 or 3 years old before finding out his
potential value as a future herd sire.
GOOD SHOWING SPURRED
BREEDERS TO ORGANIZE
Limited testing in Virginia and else-
where confirmed the practicability of
judging a bulls breeding potential by
calfhood tests. Virginia Agricultural Ex-
periment Station researchers, the Virginia
Division of Markets, and breeders rea-
lized the importance for herd improve-
ment of recognizing outstanding bulls
early. So in 1955 they organized State
breeders for ROP testing of beef cattle.
This was the first such statewide plan.
Similar groups have since been started in
a number of other States.
What is performance testing and how _
does it operate? Its the evaluation of in-
herited differences in ability to grow rap-
idly, to mature early, to use feed effici- |
ently, and to develop the desired type of
carcass, Its done by measuring gain be-
fore and after weaning, feed requirements
per pound of gain, and grade (or type
desirability). Confidential data are pro-
vided to association members on all pro-
geny of each bull and cow in member
herds.
PROFESSIONAL AND RECORD
SERVICES ARE GIVEN
When a breeder joins the association
which he can do if he has 25 or more
purebred or grade cowshe gets a code
number of his herd and an IBM card for
each cow. When a cow calves, the breed-
-er gives the calf a number to identify it,
records the number, the calfs sex, birth
date, and weight, and the identification
number of its sire and dam. He mails a
card on each calf to the State supervisor
in Blacksburg. Just before weaning time
a team visits the farm to weigh and grade
his cattle.
Breeders get from the State office the
performance record of each calf, show-.
ing age, weight, type score, average daily
gain, and index value. All calves by one
sire are grouped and their average per-
formance shown, At the end of the year,
each breeder gets a performance record of
the progeny of all organization sires.
Thus, a breeder can better evaluate
the worth of each animal in his herd. He
can compare gains and type scores of
calves sired by different bulls, He can
compare the performance of all cows in
from cattle to humans through >
_ing of raw or improperly pasteur
