Did you ever see a hog sweat? If you
think you did you had better take another
_ look, for they do not. The only way they
can cool themselves is by faster breathing
-or from outside temperatures. The hog
cannot stand too much exertion or activi-
ty in hot weather.
The hot summer days are here so now
is the time to be extremely careful in hand-
ling hogs on the farm or enroute to mar-

By PHIL CAMPBELL
Commissioner of Agriculture -
Our fieldmen report the screwworm
eradication program is working well and
reports of screwworm infestations in 5 2
Georgia and Florida indicate that we may
-
soon eliminate this pest.
In the new budget for this fiscal year
Gov. Marvin Griffin approved an appro-
priation of $240,000 to finance Georgias
part in the combined Federal-State ef-
forts to oo the screwworm pest.
Rapecsentative of the Georgia Depart-
ment of Agriculture are working closely
with Federal officals to insure the eradica-
tion of the screwworm as soon as possible.
As of June 28 of this year Federal lab-
oratory specialists had identified 440 cases
as positive screwworm cases but the im-
portant. fact about these cases is that all
of them were found below the quarantine __ a
line established in Florida except for 12
and only two of the 12 cases were found in
Georgia.
The quarantine line was established
across north Florida last winter in an ef-
fort to hold the wintering screwworm fly
in the wintering area and prevent migra-
tion northward. Apparently air drops of
sterile male flies above this quarantine line
are accomplishing our purpose.
As further indication of the success of
this program one infested Florida county
was plagued with as many as 75 screw
worm cases, but after a heavy concentrat-
ed air drop of sterile male flies the num-
ber of cases in this county was reduced to
only one case three weeks ago.
But I want to warn farmers that al-
though the program seems to be working

CLASS. 1 MILK PRICE INDEX
AUGUST 1, 1958
_ The Price Index for Class I fluid milk in Georgia,
alculated according to the official pricing formula, de-
eased slightly between July 1 and August 1 from
14.11 to 112.41 but remained in the same bracket. The.
change is attributed to a decrease in prices of hay and
mixed dairy feed. The Farm Wage Rate Index increas-
slightly. Other variables remained unchanged from
uly 1. The formula automatically balances changes
nd produces a net change in the milk price index.

fine and we have had only two screw
worm cases in Georgia at this writing, it
is just as important as ever that we do not
relax our vigilance.
This program can not be successfully
carried out unless farmers continue to
watch their livestock carefully for signs
of screwworm infestation and then fol-
low through when such cases are discover-
ed,
As announced several times previous-
ly, when a farmer finds an infestation he
should treat the wound immediately to
kill all screwworms, collect 10 worms in
a bottle of water and notify his county
agent immediately.

a a ian hog either at the unloading chutes
- or inside the barn, at many of the markets.
These hogs died because they got too hot.
One or two hogs lost out of a farm
truck load means that farmer has lost his
profits from that group of hogs. The im-
portant factor is, these losses can be pre-
vented.
Listed below are some factors which
will tend to reduce this loss from over-
heated hogs:
1. When hogs are to be marketed on
the next day they should be moved into .
the barn area (or loading area) the night
before and the hogs to be sold sorted out
from the rest and kept overnight near the
loading chutes. :
2. Load and haul hogs only in early
