During the next few months, Georgia
ers will be buying and sowing rye
winter grazing. Unless extreme
used in purchasing the seed, many
will be disappointed in the growth

WHY FARMERS ARE GOING BROKE Some irresponsible public officials and some of the ire
responsible national press have made untrue statements that marginal farmers have been kept in

business by high price supports. This statement is far from factual.

Nnoe but the most efficient |

farmers have been able to survive. With present price supports, they have had to survive on as much ~

as 22% less than other income groups.

The chart above adequately shows why charges that high

support prices support marginal farmers is untrue. Assuming that 100 percent of parity would place
farmers on an equal basis with other income groups we see by the chart that none of the commodity
producers listed above are receiving an even break. Cotton farmers are receiving only 80 percent
of parity, tobacco farmers 90 percent, peanut farmers 82 percent, commercial corn farmers 78

percent and wheat farmers 80 percent. i

Laboratory by seed characteristics and

as a result farmers sometimes plant va-
rieties not adapted to Georgia.

The variety can often be identified by
growth habits. Because of this, rye sam-
ples from the State Department of Agri-
culture inspections have been planted for
the past three years by Dr. U. R. Gore,
Experiment, Ga., and Dr. D. D. Morey,
Tifton, Ga., in order to determine if the
seeds were correctly labeled as to variety.

In 1955, about 25 percent of the rye
samples picked up by our inspectors were
judged to be mislabeled. The following
season a better job was done and only

about three percent of the rye samples

were mislabeled...

The 1957-58 season has proved to be

a sad case of back-sliding by several.
wholesale and retail seed dealers. At least
21 samples from a total of 124 were mis-
labeled. Thus 17 percent of all rye sam-
pled by the State Department of Agricul-
ture was found to be mislabeled. Several
other samples from rye shipped into Geor-
gia were winter types with poor forage
production and should never have been
sold in Georgia.

Certified samples of rye from Georgia
have never been found mislabeled in state
tests. The farmers best insurance for a

good winter grazing rye is to buy and

plant Georgia grown, Georgia recom-
- mended varieties, of rye.
