Opening Date Usually.
Represents Compromise |

By PHIL CAMPBELL
Commissioner of Agriculture

July 29, the date set for the opening of
the Georgia-Florida flue cured tobacco
markets this year, represents a compro-
mise between tobacco farmers who are
about evenly divided as to the best date for
sales to begin.

Each year the Georgia Pobudeo Ad-

the Georgia tobacco growing area and

-}-recommends an opening date for flue

cured sales to begin.

The advisory board is made up of me
as chairman; John Duncan, Quitman, pres-
ident of the Georgia Farm Bureau; Ed
Perry, Claxton farmer; Aulbert J. Bran-
nen, Statesboro, president of the Georgia
Flue Cured Warehousemens Association;
State Representatives William L. Lanier,
Metter, Hoyle Yandle, Lyons and David
L. Newton, Norman Park, and State Sen-

sey Dean, Alma.

This year farmers were about evenly
divided 50-50 on what they considered the
best date for the opening of our tobacco
markets. Half wanted July 24 and half
wanted July 31.

The State Tobacco Advisory Board
was also divided in its opinion as to the
best date for sales to begin.

The date of July 29 was also accepted
as a compromise by the Bright Belt Ware-
house Association meeting at Myrtle
Beach, S. C,

As a result all farmers did not get the
date they wantedthey got a compromise
date that comes the closest to suiting
everyone concerned.

Seldom will the opening date suit all
Georgia farmers and warehousemen in-
volved because of different state geogra-
phic areas and different weather condi-
tions.

Last year the situation was different.
Because of an unusual growing and har-
vesting season Georgia farmers and mem-
bers of the State Tobacco Advisory Board

were about 95 percent in agreement on

Georgia Cotfon Acreage

| Georgia cotton acreage in palicens
tion on July 1, 1958, is estimated at
406,000 acres, according to the Geor-
gia Crop Reporting Service. This is

were started in 1866. :
The states cotton acreage has de-
creased 30 percent from the 578,000
acres in cultivation one year ago, The |
largest cotton acreage planted in

5,219,600.

a decrease of 12 percent from 1957.

the best date for opening the states to-
bacco sales.

As Georgia tobacco farmers will re-

member, the date agreed upon in Geor-
gia for 1957 was not agreeable to the
Bright Belt Tobacco Warehouse Associa-
tion and as a result we had a fight on our
hands but eventually the association
agreed to accept our date.

In 1956 the State Tobacco Advisory
Board recommended one date and the
Board of Governors of the Bright Belt As- .
sociation set another. We yielded to the
Bright Belt group as a compromise mea-
sure.

In 1955 everyone was pretty well
agreed on the date for opening Georgia-
Florida tobacco markets.

The opening date for beginning to-
bacco sales in Georgia is not a simple mat- _
ter. As a rule it has to be compromised. It
has to be compromised between different
farmers representing different areas of
Georgia and Florida. Then it has to be
compromised between the Georgia-Flori-
da growing area and the Carolina areas.

Georgia and Florida represent only a
portion of the nations large flue cured to-
bacco industry yet the opening date for the
Georgia-Florida markets pretty well sets
the stage for the entire producing area.

It is doubtful if there will ever be an
opening date set that will agree with the
wishes of every single tobacco grower and
warehouseman but by cooperation and
compromise we can usually get a date
that is agreeable to the majority of the
people in the flue cured tobacco belt.
