TALMADGE FIGHTING
FOR COTTON FARMER
I have received a letter from Sen.
Herman Talmadge that I am sure
Georgia cotton farmers will find in-
teresting. It reads in part as follows:
For your information I am here-
with enclosing copies of the farm bill
approved by the Senate Agriculture
Committee and the report on it.
I fought in Committee for a pro-
vision to prevent any cut in allotment
for farmers with 15 or less acres of
' cotton, but the most with which the
Committee would go along was 10 or
less acres. That will protect the pres-
ent acreage of 74 percent of our Geor-
gia farmers.
Let me emphasize that my pro-
viso does not guarantee a minimum of
10 acres but rather only that no farm-
er with 10 or less acres shall have his
present allotment cut.
Certainly this legislation for
which Sen. Talmadge is working
would be of great benefit to the ma-
jority of our Georgia cotton farmers.
It would protect them from further
acreage cuts and allow them to grow
enough cotton to make cotton pro-
duction worth while. It is my hope
that Congress will agree with Sen.
Talmadge and include this provision
in any new farm legislation.
Phil Campbell
Commissioner of Agriculture
scale might serve only as an estimating
machine.
As a further precaution, a law was
passed in 1956 which requires all persons
weighing tobacco to be licensed and bond-
ed with the Department of Agriculture.
Inaccurate weighing procedures are
the exception, not the rule. Most of the
scales checked by the inspectors have been
found to be operating properly, within
the prescribed tolerance. State inspec-
- tors will be working constantly through-
out the 1958 tobacco season to keep the
scales accurate as a protection to the buy-
er and the seller.

Likes Two-Price Plan
At a meeting of the Farm Bureau
members of Coffee County, Georgia at
Douglas, Georgia on May 24th., 1958, at
which 502 farmers were present, the fol-
lowing resolution was read, introduced
_and passed unanimously by the farmers
present: :
We unanimously approve of the two |
(2) price program advocated by Senators
Talmadge and Russell and others with re-
ference to export crops. We urge that Sen-
ators Talmadge and Russell introduce leg-
islation whereby the farmer may plant
what he wants to plant and sell his crops
for the best price he can get, with the
Federal Government paying him the dif-
ference between the price he receives for
commodities sold for domestic consump-
tion and 100 per cent of parity.
We commend Senator Russell, Senator
Talmadge, Congressman Whitten of Mis-
sissippi and Commissioner of Agriculture,
Phil Campbell and other Senators, Con-
gressmen and public officials for their
support for this new plan for agriculture.
We urge that all farmers write Con-
gressmen and Senators and other inter-
ested parties to support this new Nation-
al farm program and that a copy of this
_ resolution be furnished to all Georgia
Congressmen and Senators and to the
local, State and National press.
We also urge that the Georgia State
Farm Bureau advocate and support this
plan.
