Research On Storing ihage
Corn Silage Results Told

Trench silage eosts less than silage

stored in an upright silo, according to a

cooperative study by the USDA and the
Alabama Experiment Station on 71 Ala-
bama farms.

It costs $5.18 to harvest, store, and feed
a ton of silage when an upright silo is
used, compared to $3.93 with a trench silo.
Spoilage was 2.3 percent greater, how-
ever, with the trench silo.

CORN SILAGE |

Corn silage can be fed to brood sows
during gestation with satisfactory results,
aceording to Perdue University.

The three year research program
showed that feeding of good quality corn
silage, 1.5 pounds of a high quality pro-
tein, and minerals free choice, resulted in
a 20 percent: reduction in feed costs, an

- increase of 1.4 to 2.0 more pigs per sow
at farrowing, and an increase of 0.3 to 1.3
more pigs per litter at weaning.

NUMBER 41

Housewives Are Buying

Smaller Hams, Pork Cuts

By JESSE HALL
State Dept. of Agriculture

Mass farmers today are not receiving
the maximum and most efficient returns
from their hogs. This is because their hogs
are not marketed at the correct weight.

The best weight, so the paekers tell us A

today, is around 200 pounds.
The majority of our housewives are

looking for the smaller hams, picnics and
other cuts of pork because of the reduced
size of todays family unit, modern eook-
ing methods, and many other factors.

When the hog reached approximately 230

pounds in weight it willlay onfatoverthe

body at a much faster rate than the lighter
hogs; in other words the gain in weight is
primarily a gain in fat around and in the
carcass.

A large number of the fat hogs mark- a

eted in Georgia would be meat type hogs
if they are sold at weights

to feed his hogs to heavier weights may

feel justified in doing so because he has

a surplus of corn, but he would realize

more money in return if he would buy =

enough pigs to utilize his corn and then
sell all of the hogs at the proper weight.
Quite often a difference of 30 or more
pounds of weight will grade the hog down
from a U.S. No. 1 to a No. 2, or from a
U.S. No. 2 down to a No. 3. E
The extra fat on the carcass will not
all be on the outside of the carcass. Much
of it will be intermingled throughout the
shoulders and a large amount of intra-
muscular fat will be inside of the ham.
Statistics show that the hams of a U.S. No.
3. grade hog will be around 26 percent fat
while the ham from a U.S. No. 1 grade hog
will be only about 6 percent fat. Actually,
it is this intramuscular fat that the pack-
ers are concerned with, They can trim the

fat from the outside of the ham, shoulders,

and pork chops but the nr fat cannot be
trimmed out. :

From an economical standpoint, the
producers are losing money when they
feed their hogs to the heavier weights.
