Good Plants Key To
- Tobacco Production
The most profitable tobacco crops are
those transplanted at the proper time with
healthy plants of the desired size, accord-
ing to J. B. Preston, Extension Tobacco
Agronomist, located at Tifton.
The best way for Georgia tobacco
growers to have these plants is to grow
them on the farm, It has been estimated
that 15 to 20 percent of the growers in
Georgia either do not attempt to grow
| plants or fail to produce enough plants
to meet their requirements.
With the advent of new and effective
disease and weed control materials to-
gether with the availability of equipment
for watering the beds, there is now no
need for tobacco growers in any section
of the Georgia belt to depend on buying
plants. By producing plants on the farm,
the grower eliminates the possibility of
bringing diseases and insects to his. farm
on tobacco plants.
With reasonable care, 100 square
yards of bed will produce more than
enough plants to set an acre of tobacco at
the proper time. Plant production by a
tobacco grower is the best insurance for
Name Benson Secretary
Of Political Hogwash
By PHIL CAMPBELL
Commissioner of Agriculture
Rather than Secretary of Agriculture, t Bi
Ezra T. Benson should be named Secre-
tary of Political Hogwash.
In a speech in Athens last Wednesday,
September 25, Secretary Benson was
quoted in the press as saying, It is politi-
cal hogwash to say high price supports |
would solve the problem of the small ae
farmer. t
To my way of thinking this statement
again confirms President Eisenhower's
role for Bensonthat of making world
peasants out of our farmers or driving
them off the land and leaving the owner- ~
ship of our farms in the hands of as few
people as possible rather than in the hands
of as many people as possible.
Mr. Benson has continuously left the
impression that 90 percent of parity is a
high price. Actually 90 percent of parity ~>-
is low. One hundred percent of parity
would be an even price and 110 percent
of parity would be high.
The worst political hogwash ever ac-
complished has been the lowering of prices
of farm products to 80 percent of parity
or less by the Eisenhower administration
while at the same time continuously rais-
ing interest rates on money and increas-
ing the minimum wage from 75 cents to
$1 per hour.
Secretary Benson has been assigned
the task by President Eisenhower of con-
vincing the farmer that it is the farmers
role in America today to accept a farm
depression and world peasantry for him-
self in order to build prosperity and a high
standard of living for all segments of our
society living in town. This is really a
political drive to gain city votes at the ex-
pense of the farmer. :
a successful tobacco crop. Growers are
urged to contact their local County Agent
for the latest recommendations for the
- production of tobaeco plants.
