Farm Milk Storage Tanks

Are Rapidly Increasing

By PAUL MORRIS

Almost three years ago we recognized

that the milk holding tank on the farm
_was making its entry into this state and

with prospects of rapidly increasing in
numbers,

Since the Weights and Measures Sec-

| tion of this Department has made tests on

scales for accuracy at milk receiving sta-
tions, as a routine duty to both producer

and processor all the while, we felt that

the same service was due the producers
and distributors on the tank system check-
ing calibrations for accuracy.

- Your department at the outset adopted
standards and type requirements designed
to help protect the dairy farmer in his in-

-vestment. It is required that specifications
be submitted for study as to construction

gs $ ERADICATION PROGRAM

Procedure To Follow
In Testing Counties

By PHIL CAMPBELL
Commissioner of Agriculture

We have had many inquiries from ~

farmers in regard to setting up their
counties for area testing under the bru-
cellosis eradication program. A number

of farmers whose counties are not under

test have asked how they could go about
getting their counties set up so they can
get their cattle tested.

The Veterinary Division of the Geor-
gia Department of Agriculture in coopera-
tion with the U.S. Department of Agricul-
ture has set up a plan of procedure for
brucellosis testing which has been follow-
ed by the counties under area test.

The county agent in the individual

counties usually takes the lead role in or-
ganizing and conducting an educational
campaign for testing in his county. Ordi-
narily his first step is to call a meeting of
the livestock owners in the county with
Federal and State officials to discuss the
various aspects of the program.
_ By surveying the county, it is deter-
mined whether or not certification is feasi-
ble. This survey shows the number of
herds under one of the approved plans for
controlling brucellosis, and the herds
which are not participating in any of the
disease testing programs. The past results
of the herds which have taken part in the
testing programs, and the evaluation of
the herds which are not included deter-
mines the possibility of declaring the
county for area testing.

At the general meeting called by the
county agent, a county brucellosis commit-
tee is usually organized, This committee
contacts the county commissioners and
requests them to pass a resolution request-
ing the Commissioner of Agriculture to
conduct measures for the eradication of
brucellosis in the county.

After this resolution is passed, the
Commission, through the Veterinary Di-
vision of the Department of Agriculture,
declares the county for Plan A area test-
ing.

Area testing is then begun. Local vet-

.. In order for a county to be certified as
a modified brucellosis free county, the re-
sults of these tests must show not more
than one per cent of infected cattle in not
more than five percent of all herds.

If the county tested does not meet
these standards, it may not be certified
until necessary re-tests have been con-

-and certain safety features before type ap-
proval is given.

_ Experience has revealed that our ef-
fort has saved multiplied thousands of
-Gollars for producers as well as distribu-
tors.

Since there are factors which must be
considered before installation is made in
the milk room, it is well that each pros-
pective purchaser of a tank contact Health
authorities who have jurisdiction in their
locality and know the requirements for
installation such as distance from walls,
height from floor, port hole angle; and,
if the tank has been approved by the Geor-
gia Health Department.

Your installation man is eapacied to
set the tank in the correct position and
level so that it will be ready for the
Weights and Measures inspector to check.

There are approximately 800 tanks
now located on farms in Georgia which
have been approved. Your Department
has qualified inspectors to check your cal-
ibration, working with equipment certi-
fied to by the National Bureau of Stand-

New National Swine Litter
56-Day Weight Record Set

A purebred litter has established a
new national 56-day litter record for all
breeds of swine, according to the Ameri-
can Landrace Association,

The Kaeding Brothers of Bridgman,
Mich., reported that they farrowed an 18
pig litter Sept. 14 (16 of the 18 lived)
which was raised to a total litter weight
of 939 pounds at 56 days.

The previous record was 935 pounds,
established two years ago in Latimer,
Iowa, by a Landrace litter raised by Don
Koch.

The litter was entered in the Michi-

gan State sow testing program which calls

for 35 day weights, and at 5 weeks this
litter weighed 460 1/2 pounds. They were
not fed any pig pellets until the fifth
week, For the first four weeks the litter

| lived off the sows milk with a slight sup-

plement of cows milk.
