if this insect sia gained entry into the

state. _

If the bollworm is found in Geor gia
the area in which he is found will im-
mediately be placed under quarantine to

_ prevent its spread. Such a quarantine

would impose various restrictions on the

growing, ginning and handling of cotton.

The destructiveness of the pink boll-

_ worm is readily realized in the fact that

during 1952 in South Texas alone it

-eaused damage estimated at $28,000,000.

The pest is now known to infest parts of

Texas, New Mexico, Reshoms: Arizona

and Louisiana.

Georgia Farm Bureau
Starts Membership Drive

Several thousand voluntary Georgia
Farm Bureau leaders are conducting the
ennual Farm Bureau membership drive
this week.

Some 5,000: county and community

' workers began soliciting membership

Tuesday. Each farm family in Georgia is
being urged to join his local Farm Bureau
chapter. A $500 accidental death policy
will be given free to each 1958 member.

Governor Marvin Griffin earlier de-
clared and set aside September 24 as
State-wide Farm Bureau day.

The state-wide membership goal is
45,373 farm families. .

Georgia's Pecan Crop

Hurt By Rains and Scab

Georgia will again rank first in the

production of improved pecans in 1957 |

even though heavy rains and scab have
cut the crop about 65 percent, according
to the United States Department of Ag

The estimated production of pecans for
- Georgia in 1957 is 15,500,000 pounds, 35,-
500 pounds less than the 51,000,000
pounds produced in Georgia in 1956, 22

The crop of improved variety pecans

in North Carolina, South Carolina, Geor-
gia, Florida, Alabama. and Mississippi is.
expected to total 31.8 million pounds. This
is down 66 percent from last years crop
of 93.3 million pounds.

The USDA estimates the production :

of improved varieties in southeastern -

. States as follows: The first figure is the

1956 production, The second is the 1957

estimate: North Carolina, 1,450,0002,-

300,000; South Carolina, 2,900,000-7,260,-

Florida is the only state in the anaes

east to show a prospective increase this
. year in improved varieties. Its estimated

crop of 2.4 million pounds is 200 thousand
pounds above last year. Heavy rains as
