es Welcome

icate that the

ations | says. ae
orted by the

leader, but, naturally, it brought a lot
_of people into the store.
It looked suspicious, so we had some

of our shoppers weights and measures
officials dressed like ordinary shoppers

- go into the store and make purchases.
These were checkweighed at the weights
ad measures laboratory. All were grossly
underweight. The store owner was ar-
rested to put a stop to this practice which
_ had been unfairly pulling customers from
legitimate competitors.
Items found most subject to this kind

of unfair competition include poultry of
all kinds, hams and cabbages, the weights
and measures official said.
Another important contribution of the
weights and measures inspector is that

_ of discovering scale errors working a-
gainst the store owner.
- |... Annual reports across the nation
- show that about half the mistakes.found
cost the food retailer money. A typical
example is given in a letter to the editor
of the Richmond, Va., News-Leader, the
Seale Association said.
Grocer V. I. Timberlake, reporting
that when a weights and measures in-
spector condemned his scale, he at first
resented the cost and inconvenience

wrote.

Committee of

sociation, One

of having it repaired,
when the inspector gave him a
error chart showing how expensive a
half-ounce error (that of Timberlake's
scale) could be. The loss on material
weighed on the scale came to $936 a year.

The money I would lose in one month
would more than cover the necessary re-
pairs to the scale. This convinced me of
the importance of having a weights and
measures inspector test my scales semi-
annually as a protection for me as well
as for my customers, the food retailer

Thousands of such cases could be cit-
ed, the Scale Association said. Common-
est causes of scale mistakes are neglect,
abuse, and the build-up of friction by
over-long use of scales. The Education

the National Conference

on Weights and Measures has worked up
a scale error chart which shows the a-
mounts of money various weighing errors
can cost buyers and sellers. It is available,
free, from the Scale Manufacturers As-
