Hogs Produce Better
If Kept A Bit Hungry
When hogs are kept a bit hungry, they
outperform their fat or fullfed brothers
and sisters, according to Washington State
College, Pullman, Washington,
A total of 1,705 hogs were involved in
~ the 10 year Washington State study and,
according to Animal scientist S. H, Fowler
of Washington College, the lean hungry
hogs grew taller, produced more meat per
pound of feed, and produced and weaned
more pigs than the fullfed fat hogs. The
fullfed hogs did put on weight faster, and,
of course, got fatter.
_ Dr. Fowler says the study shows that
swine breeders do not need to feed hogs
all they can eat for more efficient produc-
tion. He also says that better selection of
top sires and sows for the foundation stock
can be made if these animals are kept a
bit on the hungry side.

FOREST LANDS
NAVAL STORES
Record Pine Cone Crop
Gathered By Georgians
Georgians have collected the largest
cone supply in history, according to the
Georgia Forestry Commission.
One hundred thousand bushels of
conesincluding 75,000 slash, 23,000 lob-
lolly and 1,500 longleafwere harvested
_this year to provide seed for six forest
tree nurseries. The average price per
bushel was $1.50 for loblolly and $1.00
for slash.
A new cone curing and _ extraction
plant, which is the only one of its type-
in the world, is already under full opera-
tion in Macon. Reforestation officials said
the plant will process about 3,000 bushels
of cones a day. Three thousand bushels of -
cones yield about 1,500 pounds of seed.
The cone processing will start in the
top floor of the three-story building and
will continue to the ground floor level.
The utilization of the gravity flow method
will result in the seed being in perfect
condition because of less handling.
The cones, after the seed are extracted,
are ground-up and used as mulch on the
seedling beds in the nurseries.
1958 Cotton Allotment
Announced For Georgia
Georgia farmers have been alloted
905,387 acres on which to grow their 1958
upland cotton crop. This is an increase of
574 acres over the 904,813 acres alloted
Georgia for 1957.
The 1958 National cotton acreage al-
lotment is 17,391,304 acres. This is a de-
crease of 194,159 acres over the 1957 Na-
tional allotment of 17,585,463 acres.
The state allotment of 905,387 acres
will be apportioned among the 159 Coun-
ties in Georgia and the county allotments
among farms in the county. Individual
farm acreage allotments will be mailed to
operators of cotton farms.
