ARTIFICIAL BREEDING
Frozen Semen Now
Available To Farmers
Frozen semen for artificial breeding
of cattle is now available to Georgia dairy-
men on a regular basis through the Amer-
ican Breeders Service.
John McGowan, dairyman for the Ag- __ -
ricultural Extension Service, University
of Georgia College of Agriculture, said ise
that the first Georgia delivery of frozen
_semen was made at Thomasville, Nov. 1;
Douglas, Perry and Griffin, Nov. 3; At-
Janta, Hub Junction, Union Point, War-
renton and Augusta Nov. 4.
__. MeGowan said that the delivery truck i
will be on a very tight schedule and de-
BN teats
lay at any stop cannot be permitted. He
said that deliveries will be made on the
same day of the week at the same time of ui
day, every two weeks.
_ The extension dairyman said that the
availability of the frozen semen will of-
fer a number of advantages to Georgia |
dairymen which could not be offered by
technicians using liquid semen.
Frozen semen can be held indefinite-
ly without any deterioration, McGowan
said, and it gives a four to 15 percent high-
er conception rate. With frozen semen,
technicians can offer a greater choice of
bulls of a given breed and also semen of
more breeds will be available. A further
advantage is that there is no waste in the
use of frozen semen.
Neil Manley, field man of American
Breeders Service, said that frozen semen
will replace liquid semen in Georgia and
should make artificial breeding much
more desirable to Georgia dairymen
through an improved conception rate and
through use of greater proved sires than
have been available in the past.
Manley pointed out that frozen semen
is maintained without deterioration by
storage in liquid nitrogen which holds the
semen at minus 360 degrees Fahrenheit.
For example, cows are still being
settled by semen from a bull, Cottonade
Emmet, which died in November 1953,
Manley declared.
Manley said that as of July 1, more
than 500 technicians in some 15 states

Agreement will be exceedingly
small, per carload
6. Unlike the Agreement in force
years ago, which
only US No. 1 quality to be
shipped, this Agreement provides
that no grade higher than 85 per-
cent of U. S. No,
quired. Which means that prac-
tically all merchantable and eat-
able melons can be shipped.
How can a marketing agreement be end-
ed?
A. It can be voted out by 51 percent
of the growers who produce 51
percent of the volume of water-
melons. The Secretary of Agri-
culture can also end it if he de-
termines that the
no longer accomplishing its pur-
pose.

ment?

Can the Federal-State Inspection Service
handle the increased volume of inspection
work if the agreement is approved?
A. Yes. Inspection Service officials
have given every assurance that
they can. It is true that at present
only about one-third of the water-
melons are being inspected, while
under an agreement nearly all
would be. But watermelon farm-
ers should keep this in
During the last season for which
figures are available, 1955-56,
about 400,000 carlot equivalents

were inspected by the Service in
the three states area. Adding an
extra 24,000 carlot equivalents of
watermelons to this total would
be only a 6 percent increase in

volume.
During seasons when the committee de-
cides regulations are necessary, what is
the earliest date for such regulations?
A. May 11 is the earliest date, un-
less the grower member from the
South Florida District requests
that regulations start earlier.
Is there a provision to take care of small
quantities of melons?
