~ Planning Association
A proposed constitution and by-laws
are being drawn up for the Southeastern
Association of Poultry and Egg Market-
_ing and Regulatory Workers.
_ The Association, organized at the
Southeastern Egg Quality and Grading
School in Athens earlier this summer, will
consider the constitution and name perm-
anent officers at a meeting now scheduled
in conjunction with, the Southeastern
Poultry and Egg Association's 10th an-
nua! convention in Atlanta Jan. 28-30.
The specific time and place for the meet-
_ing will be announced later, according to
C. E. Boggs, temporary chairman who is
chief of the Georgia Department of Agri-
- cultures egg section.
The Association was formed for pot
try and egg inspectors and Agricultural
~ Extension Service poultry workers so that
_ they may discuss mutual programs and
problems, get to know each other better
and promote cooperation between the of-
ficials in adjacent states.
The Associations temporary officers
are serving as a committee to draft the
constitution and by-laws. In addition to
Mr. Boggs, W. A. Tuten, South Carolina
Extension Service Marketing Specialist,
_ Columbia, serves as temporary vice-chair-
man and R. E. Boswell, Greensboro, Ga.,

LARGER SWINE LITTERS
NUMBER &
~ Good Management Key
To Profifs In Hogs =
It is time now for early-bred sows
and gilts to begin farrowing fall litters
and many hog farmers could increase
their swine profits by doing a better job
of management and raising more pigs per
litter.
That is the thinking of Bill Hays,
swine specialist for the Si Ex-
tension. Service.
Tt is not hard to find oe over
the state who are raising eight or more
pigs per litter, let the state average is
around 6.5 pigs per litter, Hays points -
out, adding, A sow that raises only five
pigs requires almost as much feed as one
that raises nine or ten pigs.
With sows now bringing in fall lit-
ters the swine specialists says farmers
should begin now to insure larger litters -
saved and thus more profit off the sow in
the market place. He says farrowing
houses and pens should be thoroughly
cleaned and disinfected. If a portable far-
rowing house is used it should be moved
to clean ground so that the pigs will have
a good chance of remaining free of in-
ternal parasites.
A good hog farmer always knows the
breeding dates so that he can be on hand
to render whatever assistance is needed
at farrowing time, Hays insists. He says
perscnal attention at this time pays off
with more live pigs and urges the use of
guard rails inside the farrowing pens to
help keep the sow from mashing young
pigs.
As for feeding the sow Hays says it
is always good practice to provide some
kind of green grazing for sows in the far-
rowing lots. He recommends Starr mil-
let for ideal grazing and says it should be
seeded about four or five weeks before
the scw is to farrow.
The swine specialist says further that
a sow should receive only about two-
thirds of her normal ration for two or
three days before farrowing and feed
should be withheld from her for a few
hours after farrowing. He adds that her
feed should be increased gradually day

Good Management Key

by day until she is on full
gram, one thing the sow
. -best results is plenty of clean fresh water
at all times,
gests they be earmarked
feed in five or
six days after the pigs come.
But no matter what your feeding pro-
Hays insists.
When the pigs are a day old Hays sug-
must have for
for identifica-
tion purposes and because creep- :
usually are more uniform in size and ~
heavier at weaning time he suggests
creep feeding. He says a good creep feed
for pigs can be made by mixing 75 pounds
of cracked corn with 25 pounds of protein
supplement.
Just like anything else, a good job of
management is necessary if farmers are
to realize any measure of success in a
swine operation. You cant make money
on hogs if your sows raise only five pigs
per litter.
