Other nurseries are in operation at Al-

ficials in Washington as they plan agri- |
cultural programs for the nations farm-
ers.

gram for the mid-western corn growers .

is concerned, is being shown farmers of
the mid-west. :
Corn belt senators and congressmen
are attempting to have Congress approve
a plan whereby corn growers would
be given a 15 percent increase
in corn acreage, thus allowing the plant-
ing of a 51-million-acre corn crop instead
of the 37.3 million acres that were previ-
ously approved. Se
But they have gone even further than
this. It is proposed that these farmers be

Crop Reporters Count
Livestock In Georgia
How would you like to have the job
of counting all the cattle,
goats, horses, mules, and poultry in Geor-
gia?
Thats the task facing Archie Langley,
state statistician of the Gerogia Crop Re-
porting Service in Athens.
With the help of farmers, ranchers,
MARKET BULLETIN
hogs, sheep,
and the U.S. Post Office, weve been get-
ting a very accurate estimate of livestock
and poultry holdings,
Rural mail carriers will distribute
more than 12,000 livestock and poultry in-
ventory cards throughout the state.
Tf the postman leaves a card in your |
box, be sure to fill it out as accurately as
you can and return it prone, Mr.
Langley urges.
These cards are the main sources of
information. in determinging the number
says Mr. Langley.
of livestock and poultry on Georgia farms.
Georgia figures are then added with those
| from all other states to get the grand to-
tal for the nation.
The final. catimate will be pened
| Tater. It will melude all livestock
| poultry on U. S. farms and ranches as
January 1.
Mr. Langley pointed out that farmers
.| and ranchers as well as businessmen use
these livestock and poultry ae i
planning their operations for the comi
year.

Carolina Farmers Ask
(Continued From Page 1)
The pest was discovered there last fall
for the first time in the United States.
A committee of eight farmers, one
from each of the affected countiesfour
in North Carolina and four in South Caro-
-linapresented a statement at the hear-
_ ing endorsing a Federal witchweed quar-
antine in the interest of their own and
other States. They urged, however, that
regulatory action under the quarantine be
confined to areas actually infested with
the parasitic weed. Bill Hooks of White-
ville, N. C., and W. B. Norwood of Marion,
S. C_ acted as spokesmen for the group.
Representatives of the Virginia De-
partment of Agriculture and Agricultural
Experiment Station also attended the
hearing, and statements from officials of
10 other States and from the Central,
Eastern, and National Plant Boards, all
favoring the quarantine, were placed in
the record. States from which communi-
cations were received included Alabama,
Ariz zona, California, Colorado, Iowa, Rane
sas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, and
- South Dakota.
Advocacy of a Federal quarantine by
Carolina farmer representatives was based
_ on the understanding that (1) the general
farming practices followed in the affect-
ed counties would be taken into considera-
tion, so that the agricultural economy of
control and eradication measures for use
against witchweed would be supported
and (4) efforts to eradicate the pest would
be promptly undertaken.
