Produce More. Milk

Cows ee from tics
more pounds of milk per cow during a 56-

- day test period at the Arkansas Agricul-

gave 66

tural Experiment Station. The fly-con--

trol methods consisted of spraying with

methoxychlor plus Crag Fly mapetiant :
. and with methoxychlor only.

More specifically, during the 56-day -

test period, the cows sprayed with meth-
oxychlor plus fly repellent each gave an
average of 1,256 pounds of milk; those
sprayed with methoxychlor only gave
1,245 pounds; and those getting no treat-
ament gave 1,190 pounds,

The Arkansas station reports that the
emis return on each cow treated with
the Crag Fly Repellent-methoxychlor

mixture was $62.80, compared with $62.-

25 for methoxychlor alone and $59.50 for

the untreated control group of cows.

_| Bermuda grass,
_ enough according to J. R. Johnson, Exten- _

Georgia Farmers Need
More Coastal Bermuda

Georgia has 500, 000 acres of Coastal
but this is just halt

sion Agronomist - Project Leader: Geor-
gia needs at least a million acres accords.
ing to him.

Coastal Bermuda is a hybrid, there-
fore, it has hybrid vigor. It is the most
efficient plant in the use of nitrogen. This
fact has been demonstrated at the South-
ern Piedmont Experiment Station at Wat-_
kinsville and at the Coastal Plains Ex-
feo Station at Tifton.

Coastal Bermuda is drought resistant.
It only takes half as much water to pro-

duce a ton of Coastal, as it does with com- -

mon Bermuda.

Coastal is adapted to all areas of Geor-
gia according to Johnson. This has been
demonstrated time and again on thousands
of Georgia farms scattered over the state.

Now is the time of year to make plans_

for this grass that should be the basis of

all grazing systems. Experiment stations ~
and farmers have shown the ways, to se-~
cure weed free stands of Coastal Bermuda

quickly, are as follows:
16 Prepare soil thoroughly and wait

. for rain before planting.
2. Coastal Bermuda may be planted on |

uplarids and well-drained lowland soils,

In North Georgia, plant in spring to mid- |
plant any-

summer. In South Georgia,

a when the soil is moist.

Apply lime, phosphate and potash
acne to soil test. On low. fertility
soils at planting, apply 500 pounds of
4-12-12 in the row. Keep sprigs from com- ~
ing in direct contact with the fertilizer.
On soils of average fertility. or better,
fertilizer should not be applied until
Coastal is established to keep down weed
and grass growth.

4. Plant fresh, moist sprigs in three

foot rows and three feet in the drill. Plant

immediately after a rain. The sprigs
should be covered no deeper than neces-
sary to keep them. moist. Firm the soil by
rolling. It is best to leave one inch of the
tip above the ground. Plant same day or
by all means, within two days of digging.
