Give Recommendations
For Planting Oats Now:

Fall sown oats usually outyield spring
oats in Georgia by 50 percent when sown
on the recommended date; however, under

na

certain conditions, it is desirable to plant

oats in February in the Piedmont and in
March in the Mountain area according to
- Experiment. Station agronomists.
Spring planting is not generally re-
commended in the Coastal Plain. Corn is
often harvested too late in the Mountains
to plant oats on the same land in the fall.

_ | Also, when oats are frozen out they may
_ be replaced by spring planting.

Winter oat varieties suitable for spring
plants in the Piedmont and Mountains
are Southland, Arlington, and Victorgrain

Farm Boy Sets New
Georgia Corn Record

a living decide we have discovered the

reconsider.
And now it has Happened again. Fiat

as many of us had come to the conclusion

has exploded our theories. ah
His name in Danny Strickland, the
foster son of Mr. and Mrs. George Mer-
cer of Barney down in Brooks County.

During the three years prior to this year ;

Danny has produced yields of 134, 132,

and 149 bushels of corn to the acrewhat

most of us would consider a whopper of
a corn yield on any farm anywhere in

_ Georgia.

_ But now Danny has come up with a
yield that makes these others look easy.
This year he produced what Extension
workers believe to be the all-time record
corn yield in Georgia203 bushels to the
acre,

Dannys 1956 yield was checked and
double-checked by J. Frank McGill, Ex-
tension agronomist, University of Geor- -
gia College of Agriculture. After study-
ing corn growing records that go back

NOTICE

All farmers desiring to have seed test-
ed before planting this spring, should
send in samples immediately.

Those who wait until the latter part
of February or March may face a de-
lay in receiving test reports due to the
unusually large number of samples re-
ceived at that time of the year.

Seed samples should be sent to THE
STATE SEED LABORATORY, STATE
DEPARMENT OF AGRICULTURE, 19
HUNTER ST., S. W.,- ATLANTA 3,
GEORGIA. There is no charge for seed
testing for farmers, but there is a small
charge for commercial seed - producers

and firms.
