Despite Threat of War, Falling Farm Profits,
_ We All Have Much for Which To Be Thankful
Once again we pause in our pursuit of a satisfying life to give thanks for the- many
| blessings that have come our way during the past year.
And even though the international scene gives us reason for some con:ern, all of
Georgia farmers, in general, have experienced another pretty good crop year and
despite the crucifying price-cost squeeze that holds all farm people in its grasp, this year
t peeatily go down as one of the best in history from the standpoint of per acre
The bountiful blessings of an unselfish Lord combined with the recently gained
knowledge of modern agricultural techniques have bestowed upon us a bountiful harvest
Certainly we all need to pause more often to express our appreciation for these
blessings but particularly at this time, as we approach the close of another season, we
should all take the time to number our blessings and express our appreciation to Him
In behalf of all those who serve Georgia through the State Department of Agri-
culture, let me wish for all of you a most thankful and joyous Thanksgiving season.

Grinding Lowers Value
Of Hay For Cattle
Are you grinding hay for your dairy
cows? if you are, you may find that you
are actually grinding up money.
Grinding actually lowers the value of
the hay, because the ground material
moves tarough the cows digestive sys-
tem too fast. Feed trials reveal that grind-
ing reduces the digestion of fiber by more
than one-third.
The grinding of low quality rough-
ages, such as straw, stover, stemmy or
badly weathered hay does not improve
its quality. Heavy milking cows should
not be forced to eat coarse hay.
Any advantages that may be gained
by the reduction of the amounts of
roughage wasted is more than offset by
the cost of grinding. The dairy cow is
well equipped to do her own grinding.
Mixture of ground hay and grain has
a higher fiber content, a lower digesti-
bility and less energy per pound. than
grain Grinding the roughage does not
change it to a concentrate (grain).
Tests have shown that the fat test of
milk drops sharply when cows are on ra-
tions containing all ground roughage, or
