October 11 Event Draws
- SMatewide Attention

More than a thousand feeder calves
and yearlings, both steers and heifers,

_have been consigned to the first statewide
- Demonstration Feeder Calf Sale, to be
held in Americus, Oct. 11. The Sale looms

ag the largest of its type ever held in
Georgia. -
Perhaps. the greatest single need in

beef cattle marketing work in Georgia

is the organization of a feeder calf pro-

gram, according to R. O. Williams, live-
stock marketing specialist for the Agricul-
tural Extension Service, one of the spon- 2

sors of the Americus sale. :

The Extension Service urges Georgia
eattlemen to participate in this statewide
feeder calf sale, which is seen by Exten-
sion livestock specialists as an event of
major importance to the states beef cat-
tle industry. f

IMPORTANT MARKETING OUTLET

Says Williams: Properly conducted
teeder calf sales such as the one at Am-
ericus should become an important mar-
keting outlet. If such sales can be started
I believe they will grow and improve rap-
idly and be of great benefit to our beef
cattle producers.

A feeder calf sales program is of ad-
vantage to the buyer as well as to the
seller, Williams points out. In areas
where this type of program has been de-
veloped effectively calves have brought a
higher price per lb, Buyers are willing to
pay more when they have the opportu-

nity to buy feeder calves in uniform
groups, he said.

OBJECTIVES
The Extension Service lists five ob-

jectives to the Oct. 11 sale:

1. To help fulfill a major need in
marketing beef cattle in Georgia.

2. To expand the market outlet for
Georgia feeder calves.

3. To supply the demand of feed lot

- operators in this area and in other parts

of the country who are interested in
Georgia calves.

4. To pool (sell cooperatively) uniform
groups of calves of comparable quality,
weight, breed, and sex.

5. To assist feeder buyers in locating
ealves at minimum travel time and ex-

- pense.

Plan Listed For Long Life
For Tobacco Barn Stokers

An official of a Georgia coal company
says that farmers who cure their tobaeca
with coal-burning stokers can save equip:
ment maintenance money by as

_ this plan:

As soon as possible after the curing
season take the pipes down, knock out
ashes and soot, then pull through the
pipes an oil-soaked: sack or rag. This will
make pipes last 6 to 8 years longer. The
stoker should be covered with a tar-
paulin if it is not under a shed.

It is also suggested that the farmer
put four or five drops of oil in the motors
grease cups at the beginning of curing
season and repeat this weekly, until cur-
ing season is over.

gia farmers can help carry out these five
objectives and benefit themselves at the
same time, the Extension Service says.

WORTHY OF FEEDER LOTS

Cattle feeding in Georgia has been
increasing rapidly, Williams notes, and
the quality of cattle is being improved
to the extent that a higher percentage
of the annual calf crop is worthy of go-
ing into feeder lots.

Any Georgia cattle producer is elig-

ible to enter calves in the Americus sale,
' but entries are limited to steer and heifer

calves of predominantly beef breeding.
An official committee will grade the
calves on the basis of U. S. feeder grades.

Calves will not be paint-branded but
will be penned according to grade. They
will not be accepted, however, unless
they grade fancy, choice, good,
or medium. Sales entries will be con-
ducted on a consignment basis and con-
signments should be submitted through
county agents. No sales commission will
be charged.

-Cattlemen wishing to consign calves
have until Friday, Oct. 7 to notify their
county agents of consignments. Calves
will be taken in at the Americus Live-
stock barn through Oct, 10.

The sale is under the sponsorship of
the American Livestock Promotion Asso-
ciation, the Sumter County Livestock
Assn., the Georgia Livestock Assn., and
the Extension Service.
