. poultry processors meet the demands of
_ cities and states into which Georgia broil-
ers are being shipped. The Agriculture
Department hopes to have this inspection
service available by July 1.
-'The newest appropriation makes a
total of nearly half a million dollars allo-
cated by the state government this year
for the continued progres of the pee S
poultry industry.
_ Announcement of the latest stati by
Gov. Griffin followed closely an announ-
cement by the Agricultural Extension
Service that the states broiler industry
~ now definitely ranks as Georgias number ~
_one source of cash farm income.
As announced in the Market Bulletin
this past week, figures on broiler produc-
tion for 1955 released by the Federal-
State Crop Reporting Service show that
the number was even larger than ex-
pected with a total of 177,642,000 birds
~ valued at $125,284,000.
Along with broiler production there
is every indication of Georgia also be-
coming one of the better egg producing
states. Certainly the state has the poten-
and filled the furrows.
Coastal Bermuda Tops
Common In Piedmont
in a comparative study at Watkins-
ville of Coastal and common Bermuda
grasses, agronomists of the University
of Georgia College Experiment Station
found that Coastal consistently out yield-
ed the common in weed-free, over- -dry
forage. :
W. E. Adams and Dr. Matthias Stelly
initiated the project at the U. S. Depart-
ment of Agricultures Southern Piedmont ~
Bermuda stolons were planted in--two
foot rows, two feet apart in the row,
The first nitrogen was applied in the
row, at the rate-of 33 pounds per acre,
after growth started. Two more applica-
tions were made at- 30-day intervals,
making a total of 100 pounds per acre the -
first year, applied uniformly on all
plots. Two cultivations with a spike har-
row across the rows removed Cae
pipette a
Ls
Adams and Stelly reported that the
Coastal gave 2.12 tons per acre compared

Seed Survey Slated
In Georgia Counties
County agents of the Agricultural -
Extension Service will conduct inter-
views in their counties this spring to find
out what kind of seed Georgia farmers
plant. :
'Extension Director W. A. Sutton
of the College of Agriculture announced
that results of the seed survey will be. |
tabulated'and mailed to all county agents
for use in program planning.
psutton explained that the kind of
seed used has a big influence on yields
and quality of the crop.
He said county agents will obtain
information on corn, cotton, peanuts, and
watermelons. They will ask question#
regarding the kind and variety of seed
planted, and the farmers reasons for a
planting that particular kind. Whether a
the seed was home grown or purchased
trom a neighbor-or seed dealer also will
