For Soil, Water Conservation
Some seven and a half million dollars
will be available to Georgia farmers for
carrying out soil and water conservation
- practices during 1956, according to the
Agricultural Stabilization and Conser-
vation committee. The amount of these
funds for 1956 is about the same as the
amount allocated by the Federal eee
ment i250:
Conservation practices for which cost-
sharing will be available from the gov-
erniment include establishing and improv
ing permanent pastures and permanent
cover, planting trees, timber stand im-
provement, constructing dams for live-
stock water or irrigation, terraces, drain-
age ditches, sod waterways, wells and
pipelines for livestock water, applying
lime to conservation. crops, and estab-
lishing green manure and cover crops
_ on cultivated land.
Cost-sharing rates will be generally
about 50 percent of the cost of carrying
out the approved practices.
of the leaders. Working with him were
leading farmers, the cotton division of
the U. S. Bureau of Plant Industry, Col-
lege of Agriculture experiment stations,
ginners, county agents, and cotton manu-
facturers.
. The revolution in cotton was on a
very broad front, and it all hinged on
changes in variety, the retired agron-
omist stated. Improved varieties brought
improvements in ginning, and this en-
abled the mills to make improvements,
too. And the workers were happier,
what se yarn that didnt. break all the
time.
' Before the improved varieties, there
had been little change in the principle
of ginning since Eli Whitney invented
dhe gin in 1793, according to Westbrook.
The Fast varieties improved this situa-
tion to the extent of cutting the time it
takes to gin a bale of cotton from an hour
to five minutes.
FEARED BOLL WEEVIL
Practically all the early Georgia cot-
ton had short staple and was early ma-
turing. Westbrook explained that farmers
planted it because they thought they
would have less weevil damage with

month on working trees for naval stores
production. The demonstrations are be-
ing held for interested landowners in
20 Georgia counties, and are sponsored
by the Agricultural Extension Service.
The programs, which are open to the

terest to south Georgians who are not .
now working their trees for gum.
Place of the demonstrations can be
supplied by local ec ounty agents. The
schedule for the various counties con-
cerned is as follows: ,

55 Cotton Growing Champion
Mr. Neal Dabbs, Bartow County |
Farmer, was named Georgias 1955 Cot-
ton Growing Champion at the annual

Hotel in Atlanta. Mr. Dabbs ined 76

early cotton, and because short stapled
cotton usually had a larger gin turnout.
In fact, farmers didnt think it pos-
sible to have cotton .with a good gin
turnout and a long staple. But when
tests showed that Stoneville and Delta ~
- Pine were early, yielded well, and had
a staple of from one to one and one-
sixteenth inches, farmers asked mill
owners if they would pay more for long
staple cotton. The mills not only said
they would, but they bought seed of the
better varieties and gave them to farm-
ers to plant.
The one-variety program has helped
Georgia farmers increase the yield per
acre from 154 pounds of lint in 1932 to
an estimated 387 pounds in 1955, West-
