AGRICULTURAL MARKETING SERVICE

Ga, Coming Into Its Own
As Egg-Producing State

Already leading the nation in several
phases of poultry production, Georgia is
fast coming into its own as an egg-pro-
ducing state. So say Agricultural Exten-
sion Service poultrymen Arthur Gan-
non, H. W. Bennett, J.'R. Palmer and
James Thaxton.

The poultry specialists are the au-
thors of a new Extension Service leaf-
iet, Georgia Farmers Receive Over

_ $131,000,000 Annually From Sale of |
Poultryand Kegs.

Notes the leaflet: While Georgia, for
years, has been an importer of eggs from
the Mid-West, it is fast approaching a
point where it will not only be supply-

| ing its own needs but will be exporting
| eges to other states.

ers time would buy even more of these-

products than shown on the chart.

For example, in 1929 with the money
an American factory worker earned for

one hours work he could buy about six
and one-half loaves of bread (6.4). Ten
years later an hour of his labor would
puy 8 loaves and in 1954 it would buy
10 and one-half loaves.

State's Sheep Population
Seen Doubling In Year

Based on progress and present: inter-
est, Georgias sheep production will likely

double next year, after having cued

during the past 12 months.

This -is a report and prediction from
Pete DeLoach, Agricultural Extension
Service sheep specialist, who appraised
the 12-months period just concluded and
during which the Extension Service spon-
sored a sheep promotion program.

There are 200 to 250 Georgia farmers
now raising sheep who were not raising
them a year ago, DeLoach announces.
About 20,000 Southwestern ewes were
brought into this state during the past
year, he reports, along with about 500
rams for crossbreeding.

Sheep losses to stray dogs, one of the
worst problems among sheep producers,
were small last year, says DeLoach. We
credit this to improved management
the practice of building and keeping in-
dividual sheep programs close . the
farmstead.

Better management was also given
credit for the low death rate due to screw
worms, wool maggots, and internal para-
sites.
