Coin-Operated Machines
Increase Consumption
By J. J. SHEURING
Professor of Dairying
_ The University of Georgia
_ The dairy industry needs to do a bet-
+ ter job of selling milk and milk products.
Especially is this true in Georgia,
where the per capita consumption of milk
is far lower, than the national average of
milk consumption per person. However,
throughout the nation Americans simply
dont drink as much milk as they should,
_in spite of the fact that milk is one of the
cheapest and most nutritious of foods.
It is up-to the dairy industry to keep
this fact before the public through con-
stant and better promotion of milk and
| milk products.
But, even with good promotion, milk
sales in Georgia will not likely show a
major increase until mill: is made more
available to the public. Soft drink manu-
facturers realize that availability is one
of the key factors in a good merchandis-
-ing-plan, and have seen to it that their
products are readily available to thirsty
_ consumers.
CONSUMPTION INCREASED
One of the best ways to increase milk
consumption through greater availability
is the use of coin-operated, milk vending
machines. Here at the University of Geor-
gia we installed milk machines in several
dormitories with these results: _
Some 63,000 half-pint bottles of milk
were dispensed from nine machines,
which were installed on the campus be-
tween Sept. 23, 1954 and Feb. 18, 1955,
during a 10-months period beginning with .
the Sept date and ending Aug. 1, 1955.
However, only three of these machines
were in use during the summer months
when student enrollment was low.
These 63,000 bottles of milk repre-
sent sales of 4,562 gals. of milk which
might not have been sold otherwise since
no milk was available in these dormito-
ries before installation of the machines.
Our machines, each costing about
$650, dispensed a Canco type paper bot-
tle, some of which contained chocolate

mas buyer activiiy, the State Farmers
Market in Atlania will begin operat-
ing 24 hours a day effective Dec. 1.
drink and some containing homogenized
plain milk. The half-pint bottles sold for
10 cents each.
GIRLS USED MORE MILK
Other observations we made include
1. Boys prefer chocolate drink to plain
milk. It was in boys dormitories, though,
that we had trouble in damage. to mach-
-ines, which probably resulted from anger
of persons who put slugs in the machines
and could not make them work. We had
no such vandalism troubles in girls dor-
mitories.
2. Machines in girls dormitories sold
more milk than those placed elsewhere.
8. We had to remove some machines
from public buildings where dispensers
did not sell at least $100 worth of milk
per machine per month. We believe this
amount is the minimum for successful
operation of a machine.
New Muscadine Variety
Available To Ga. Growers
A new Muscadine grape variety, The
Higgins, is now available to Georgia grow-
eran
The new Muscadine variety is con--
sidered worthy of introduction because ~
of its excellent fruit size, large compact
clusters, outstanding yields and moderate
resistance to black rot, It is not self fer-
tile and requires a pollinator. The Hig-
_ gins is a midseason type, ripens a few
days earlier than Hunt, and has a fairly
thick but tender skin with soft pulp and
good flavor. Individual berries are very
large.
Sources of plant supply (limited) for
the 55-56 planting season can be ob-
tained by writing: Dr. B. O. Fry, Dept. of
Horticulture, Ga. Experiment Station,
Experiment, Ga.
