cD, WEIGHTS AND MEASURE:
DIVISIONS REPORTS
Mr. Hugh A. Ing@, Agronomist for the
Georgia Crop Improvement Association
showing the cooperation between the
_ Georgia Crop Improvement Association
and the Georgia Department of Agricul-
ture in seeing that the farmers get ample
supplies of high quality seeds.
Yours very truly,
H. W. Striplin, Director
Seed Division
The following is a report submitted
by Mr. Hugh A. Inglis, Agronomist for
the Georgia Crop Improvement Associa-
tion:
The relationship between the Georgia
Department of Agriculture and the Geor-
gia Crop Improvement Association has
been excellent. A great deal has been
accomplished in multiplying our breeder
seed and making these superior varieties
| and Hybrids adapted to Georgia condi-
tions available to our farmers in larger
quantities. The seed almost without an
exception have been labeled correctly as
to variety name. Few errors have been
made on germination and purity label-
ing. Due to the nature of some of our seed
which do not flow freely it is possible
that some of our work needs further study
on this point.
The State Seed Inspectors -working
under the Georgia Department of Agri-
culture have never failed to take a sam-
_ ple.of certified seed for a grower or pro-
cessor who requested it. The State Seed
Inspectors have been a great help in see-
ing that the growers and processors use
bags with the official emblem on it be-
fore they would take a sample and seal
the bag. Due to the volume of the work
it became impossible for the State Seed
Inspectors to stay with some of our large
seed plants at alltimes. The system of
having a man approved in an approved
seed plant to take samples and seal bags
has worked satisfactorily. Both the Geor-
gia Department of Agriculture and the
Agricultural Extension Service have con-
curred in this action taken by the G. C. I.
ATTENTION
The Hog and Cattle Prices Paid at
Ga. Markets carried weekly in the Bul-
letin, are necessarily being omitted
this issue in order to publish all of the
Farm Land notices received for this
special issue. The Hog and Cattle reports
will be resumed in issue of October 27th.
won . H.
4. Board of Directors. In 1953, 400,000
bags of certified seed were produced.
Seme of the larger growers and processors
had from 40,000 bags to 50,000 bags com-
ing out of their seed plants, It is inter-
esting to note that these larger operators
had less trouble meeting the crtification
standards and the Seed Laws.
The State Seed Laboratory operating
under the supervision of the Georgia De-
partment of Agriculture has been a great
service not only in causing people to com-
ply with the seed laws, but to also run
tests and make reports on certified seed
for the farmers processing them. Begin-
ning in 1946 with a handful of growers
and a few certified seed we reached 700
growers in 1953 with 400,000 bags of cer-
tified seed. This progress can be shown
in the certified seed movie As A Man
Soweth. All of these seed laboratory
scenes were made in the State Seed Lab-
oratory and each employee did an excell-
ent job. One of the State Seed Inspectors
was also shown out in the state carrying
out his official duties.
The enforcement of Georgia Seed
Laws and the control of ill adapted va-
rieties and hybrids coming from with-
out the State both certified and non-cer-
tified has been of great value to the Crop
Improvement program. This gave the
farmers an opportunity to obtain only
good seed. It was a very helpful program
while the program was still young and ~
small.
Much good can be accomplished for
the betterment of agriculture when such
agencies work together for the good of all.
