Wanted: Cane Mill Gnd Cane
For Big Southeastern Fair
Wanted: a cane mill and supply of
sugar cane ready Sept. 28, preferably
located near Atlanta.
This is a call going out from E. L.
Carteron, General Manager of the South-
eastern Fair, which will make its annual
Atlanta appearance Sept. 28 through Oct.
8. . *
oA cane mill requires the use of a mule,
which moves in a circle and pulls a long
pole. The pole, called by farmers the
is attached to gears which oper-
ate two iron rollers. Cane stalks are fed
by hand into the rollers, the juice is
squeezed out and caught in a barrel, and
is later boiled until it becomes syrup.
Anyone having-sueh -a-mill-and:or-a~
cane crop coming in about the last of
_ Sept. is urged to contact Mr. Carteron,
Lakewood Amusement Park, Atlanta.

LESS F OOD FOR GRASS
Therefore the more weeds you have
in your pasture the less food your grass
will get and grass growth will be reduced,
- Another reason why weeds should be
controlled is that they suck-up moisture
that should go to the grass. With the dry
spells and drouths we have been having
tor the past few years it is not hard to |
understand the importance of getting the
full benefit of whatever rain we get. And,
irrigation costs will be less when mois-
ture is better used.
WEEDS SHADE OUT GRASS
Certainly one of the most important
rasons why weeds should be controlled
is that grass must have sunlight but cant
get. it when weed growth is so high that
the grass is shaded out. The need of
grass for sunlight is easily proved when
you notice that grass under trees never
grows as fast, thick or tall as that Ne
ing out in the sun.
Then, too, grass under trees loses
much moisture to the deeper roots of the
tree, again the principle of the grass
having to share soil moisture, as with
the weeds.
Most of the pastures I have seen late-
ly simply need a good mowing, and need
Four Spring Lamb Sales.
Earn Georgians $28,883
In four lamb sales this spring, Geor-
_ gias sheep producers sold a total of 2,184
lambs, which brought $28,883.89.
Figures furnished by the Agricultural
Extension Service show that only three
per cent of the lambs graded prime, bring-
ing 23.8 per lb. Choice lambs brought
23 cents, while Good brought just over
18 cents.
Extension livestock specialists inter-
preted the results as an indication that it
takes quality animals to make money in
the sheep business, and predicted im-
provement in quality and consequently
_ improvement in prices in coming, years.
Utility,
Other prices by grades:
14.07, and Culls , 11:31.
Of the total number, 13.7 per cent
graded choice, 45.9 per cent graded good,
22. 1 utility, 5.1 culls. Ten per cent were
sold in odd lots.,
it now.. Many of these pastures will soon
be producing new weed seed crops so it ~
is necessary to mow before the weed seeds
are shed. When bitterweed begins to
bloom it is time to mow!
DROUTH AIDED WEEDS
Because of last years severe drouth
the great majority of Georgias pastures
got very little grass growth and were
badly overgrazed. This, along with weak-
er competition from the damaged grass,
made it easier for the weed seeds to work
down into the soil through the pounding
of hooves, pelting of rains, etc. Now this
tact is showing up in widespread weed
infestation. Some farmers apparently have
been caught by surprise on the weed sit-
uation, thinking they had weeds pretty
well controlled.
Cows prefer grass, not weeds, but it
is inevitable that cattle will get weeds
along with grass when grazing pastures
heavily infested with weeds. In addition to
whatever undesirable effects this may
produce in the milk, there is a loss in
the rate of weight gain made by beef
cattle grazing weed-infested pastures.
Weeds can be controlled. One of the
best ways to do the job is to go through
proper mowing. Above-all see that weeds
_ are cut back during their blooming stage.
