30, 1953.
For ending June 30, 1954, we had 245

on feed by reporting tonnage in lieu of
the use of tax stamps. This Act became
effective July 1, 1953. During the, first
year after effective date we had appli-
cations and issued permits for 108 feed.
manufacturers. During this period we
collected feed tax by reporting tonnage
in the amount of $172,287.87. The use of
feed stamps is still allowed and revenues
from sale of stamps during this period
amounted. to $42,472.49,

Pullets nearing maturity in colony shelters
on Ladino-grass mixture.
Ladino is top choice of pastures
_ for poultry according to Fergus
and Insko of Kentucky. A good
poultry pasture must have ten-
der green young plants, usually
short so the birds can handle
them without difficulty. Pasture
is needed. mostly for chickens
during the growing period. With
proper pasture such chickens will
save from 10 to 20 percent of
the total feed.
Ladino is a fine succulent for-
age, rich in the B vitamins and
also in vitamin A. It contributes
a considerable amount of pro-
tein and minerals but the mash
fed -must also be balanced to
take care of the total protein andy
vitamin requirements of the
chicken. Ladino elover on a- dry
basis contains 20 percent or more |
of protein; about 1% percent of
calcium; and 0.2 to.0.5 percent of
phosphorus. It contains less than
14 percent fiber during the usual
growing season and it makes
more summer growth with good
moisture than most perennial
grasses. or legumes except al
falfa. However, Ladino seems to
be much more palatable to poul-
try than does alfalfa in the green
state.
An acre of Ladino will usually
provide enough pasture for about
500 pullets. Jf the growth is good,

Its Easy to Control Rats and Mice
with Modern Methods and Materials
Handy Check List for
Getting Rid of Rats
Now, before the weather turns
cold, is an excellent time to get
rid of destructive, disease-spread-
ing rats on farms and in homes.
A brief campaign can put an end
to the ravages of these enemies.
This handy check list will help you
learn the extent of your rat and
mouse problem, then guide you,
step by step, to complete, per-
manent control.

Sanitation
Good sanitation removes all pro-
tection for hiding and under-
ground breeding. (Check items as
you correct them):
Remove all brush piles.
Clean up all junk piles.
Store lumber and firewood on
racks at least one foot off the
ground.
Put metal covers on garbage
cans and pits.
Ratproofing
Though often expensive, metal,
concrete, and other materials will
keep rats out of corn cribs, gran-
aries, warehouses, and homes.
Helpful bulletins on this control
measure are available from the
jocal health officer or county agent.
Ratproofing is reeommended for
use when:
Building containing food ma-
terial is accessible to rats.
Interior of building has dead
spaces where rats may hide
(double walls, staircases, etc.) ___
Md, Agricultural Extension
ment practices are followed, this
number may be doubled. In order
to be successful with a Ladino
pasture, care must be taken as
with other pastures in order not
to overgraze. me ; 5
Though a good stand of Ladino
will take care of the pasture
needs of poultry adequately,
poultry pasture in general should
contain a grass also. If one spa-
cies should fail the other will pro-
vide enough green feed for the
poultry. Also if the surplus pas-
ture is to be used by sheep or
cattle, the grass in the mixture
will greatly reduce danger of
bloating.
It is necessary to have a good
pasture adjoining the laying ~
houses so that the birds may be
turned out on sunny days. Ladino
is one of the best pastures that
may be used.-A saving of<as
much as 25 percent of the feed is ~
possible when there is plenty of. :
good Ladino available. When lay~
ing hens are run in Ladino or
any other lush green pasture, the
egg yolks are darker colored
which makes them less desirable
for market. ne
Ladino clover is easy to grow
and manage. It is best adapted toa
loam and heavier soil but cam
be grown on light soil. It does
best on moist well-drained soil of
high fertility. : :

Place bait for rats and mice befor
cold weather sets in, experts adv
Placing Rat Bait
Outstanding among the modern
rat and mouse baits is warfarin,
a powerfub chemical discovered at
the University of Wisconsin. W.
farin is a slow killer and does not
cause bait shyness; no toler-
ance is developed; it may be pt
chased as a concentrate, as
ready-mixed food bait, or in a
new water soluble form; and-it is
relatively safe to use. Cheek the
following steps. when you use war
farin:
Place containers filled with
warfarin bait or warfarin-
ized water in all areas where
there is noticeable rat ac-
tivity. a ;
For excellent baiting success,
use both warfarin food bait
and warfarinized water
side by side. x
Protect warfarin bait and |
warfarinized water with
nailed boards or bait boxes.
Keep bait stations amply sup-
plied for at least 14 days.
Kill weak or faltering rats;
burn or bury carcasses.
Set up a few permanent bait
stations in areas of greatest
activity to kill newcomers
and control reinvasion.
Put rat control on your autu
schedule now. Follow these sin
steps and, sooner than you
\ t possible, your pr
will be rat-free.
