Early Co. Top P Producer
, Of Peqnuts In Georgia
Early County, in Southwest Georgia,
is the states top peanut producer.
The county produced 39,139,000 lbs.
of peanuts in 1953, from a total acreage
of 35,480. Blakely is the county seat.
Other leading Georgia peanut coun-
ties; Worth (Sylvester) 34,633,000 Ibs.

choice in the matter. He must harvest
or he must Tet his crop rot in the ground.
. The same farmer can grow irees on_
soil suited for little else. If he has left
seed trees from a previous stand, nature
does his planting. He has little cultiva-
tion, other than occasional thinnings.
Weather, labor and markets are minor
congiderations. He can/harvest when
convenient
the market is right. If he chooses to leave
his stand, it continues to grow to in-
crease in value.
SEEDLINGS
Most Georgia farmers already have
standing timber to use as a basis for their
tree crop. To those who do not, how-
ever, artificial reforestation provides a
good means of assuring tree crops in
years to come. Here in Georgia, every
day is bargain day for the tree farmer;
for all pine species can be purchased
.
from Georgia Forestry Commission for-.
est tree seedling nurseries at $3 per
1,000. These include slash, loblolly, short-
leaf and longleaf. Arizona cypress, yel-
low poplar and red cedar are sold for
$6 per 1,000. An additional charge of
25 cents per 1,000 is added when the
seedlings are shipped by state truck
to the county where the farmer intends
to plant them.
The planting season begins in mid-
December and _ lasts through February
or March. We advise however, ordering
far in advance of the opening of the -
planting season because, despite the fact
that more than 100,000,000 forest tree

June Is Dairy Monthy
Bulletin Salutes Bossy
Drink Up! June is National pa
Month.
ee June is the - month when te
majesty, the cow, usually reaches top
milk production, dairymen throughout
the nation have for 18 years designated
this month as National Dairy Month.
And what better tasting and more
healthful food can be imagined than a
glass of fresh, cold sweet milk, or choc-
olate milk, or maybe even buttermilk.
Of course, when you mention sheer taste
goodness, youngsters, and a lot of older
folks, too, think first of ice cream.
More than a half million quarts of
mak is produced daily in Georgia. About
365,000 cows and approximately 30,000
persons make up this vast army that
supplies milk to Georgians and some of
Georgias neighboring areas.
The Bulletin salutes National Dairy
Month and the Georgia Dairy Associa-
tion.
seedlings are produced annually in the
Commissions four nurseries, the demand
always has far exceeded the supply.
CASH VALUE.
The farmer still undecided as to
whether to order forest tree seedlings
for reforestation might realize that, in
addition to the cash value which direct
sale of timber crops will bring him in ~
years to come, there is an additional
value.
- That additional indirect waite stems
fr om the fact that farm forests in many
areas in Georgia supply a large portion
of the timber required for farm build-
ing, fences, fuel, and revair work. Few
-are the Georgia farms which do not need
wood in some form. If this wood is not |
grown at home, it must be pur chased on
