Erosion Costs Are Gicd

By Jesup Essay Winner ~

Jimmy Yeomans, Rte. 3, Jesup, win-
ner of the states Gaining Ground with
Fertility essay contest, points out that

each inch of topsoil lost from average
land means a decrease in production per
acre equal to about five bushels of corn.

One rain, he says, ean wash away an

inc of topsoil.

Says Yeomans:
each acre of farm and ranch land within
its capabilities and treating it according

to its needs for protection and ioe

ment.

ent parents or others, ranging from $30

to $200 per month, plus lump-sum death
benefits.

HOW IT WORKS

| If you are a farm operator and will

earn a clear profit of over $400 in 1955,
you will pay a 3% social security tax

when you file your 1955 income tax
return early next year. You need not

file any special forms or reports just
the regular income tax return if you
make $400. These earnings will be credit-
ed to your social security account and
will count towards your cash benefits at
age 65, or benefits for your family if you
should die. No tax is paid on more than

$4200 earnings per year.

_ If you are a farm worker, and will
be paid at least $100 in cash wages by one
employer in 1955, he will deduct 27% of
your wages for social security. He will
keep track of your earnings during the
year, and at the end of 1955, he will send

Hog Cholera Control
Seen In Vaccination

Vaccination is the key #2 a good hog
cholera control program, according to

~ Bill Clayton, Agricultural Extension Ser-

vice livestock specialist.

Although some farmers do their own
vaccinating, Clayton believes that it will
pay in the long run to let a veterinarian

-do it. Vaccines can be found through
feed and seed dealers, or through local
veterinarians, 5

If cholera is present. on the farm when
the hogs are vaccinated, serum will be
needed to protect the hogs for the 21 days

_ it takes for the vaccine to go into effect.

Georgians Sew Fine Seam

- Mss Mary Jo Ridley, Extension Ser-
vice Clothing Specialist, says Georgia
women made-more than 47,000 garments
for their families last year.

An Extension Service pamphlet Geor-
gia Women Sew a Fine Seam, is now
available through local Home Demonstra-
tion Agents.

earnings will count toward social secur-
ity perc for you and your family.

No social security tax is pad on
earnings of over $4, 200.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

1. If you will be covered by social
security under these new provisions,

-you ll need a social security number. Con-

tact your nearest social security office for
your number. If you have had one be-
fore, be sure to ask for a duplicate, be-
cause any earnings you already have to
your credit may add-to your future ben-

elits.

2. If you hire farm help, you should
start recording the name, social security
number, and cash wages paid to each
worker whom you pay as much as $100

in the year.

A minimum of 12 years of coverage
under the law is necessary before bene-
fits can be paid.. A farmer who is now

65 can qualify with only two crop-years
ef work.

3 RETIREMENT

Social security benefits ar paid only on
retirement for persons under age 72. But
