TATE WELL-SUITED T0 SHEEP
~ Sheep Industry Boom
Predicted For Georgia
By DENIS DeLOACH
- Asst. Extension Livestock Specialist
\ S =
Georgia has long been known as a
great state for the production of peaches,
pecans, hogs and somewhat more recently, -
poultry. In time to come it may very well
be called one of the top sheep ae
states in the Nation. . : :
Since October 15 of last year some |
7,500 western ewes from Texas, New
_ Mexico, Oklahoma and Tennessee, and
more than 500 purebred rams of Suffolk
| and Hampshire breed have been shipged
into Georgia.
The Citizens and Southern National
Bank of Georgia is sponsoring a sheep
Next week in this space Agricul-
jure Commissioner Phil Campbell will
outline his views on the sheep industry
in Georgia,
domoneiation program in the state.
The program now includes 21 demonstra-
tion farms, of which 16 have grade herds
each consisting of 100: grade western ewes
and four purebred rams. The remain-
ing five farms have herds consisting of
30 purebred ewes and one stud ram.
THROUGHOUT STATE
The purpose of these farms is to show
the Georgia farmer just what can be
done with sheep in this state. These farms
will also provide data about sheep pro-
duction to be released to farmers through-
out the state. The farms are well dis-
tributed and cover the entire state. Five
years from now there will be sheep dem-
cnstration farms in 90 Georgia counties.
The University Extension Service be-
lieves that sheep can be one of our major
enterprises in Georgia. A net profit of
$22 per ewe is seen, The Extension Ser-~
vice also points out that 25 ACRES OF
LAND WILL SUCCESSFULLY SUP-
PORT 100 SHEEP.
The climate in Georgia is ideal for
successful sheep raising. The hot summer
months are not hard on the animals since
_oifspring are from western ewes. These
western ewes are of fine wool breeding,
adapted to hot and dry weather.
MARKET IN MAY
Another advantage Georgia affords is,
in normal years, adequate rainfall to pro-
" duce good winter pastures, a must in rais-

NUMBER 36
t
Colquitt Countian Is Named
Georgias Top Young Farmer
A panel of Georgia Agricultura:
leaders has selected Vayden L. Murphy.
Rte. 2, Coolidge, as winner of Georgie
~ Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmer con-
test. The young Colquitt Countian wor
over 128 other nominees of local Jaycee
units throughout-the state.
Second place went to Rufus Goody,
Jr., of Cochran, while Don Selman of De-
Kalb County took third place.
Murphy will represent Georgia in
Minneapolis, Minn., June 1-3, when the
first Four Outstanding Young Farmers
of America banquet is held. 2
Georgias winner was chosen for his :
many contributions to his community and
for leadership in a farm conservation
plan. He worked with Soil Conservation
Service technicians in developing the
first system of parallel terraces in his
community.
AMERICAN FARMER
During his high school days Murphy
was named an American Farmer by
-the Future Farmers of America. Upon
high school graduation he took over his)
fathers farm and except for time spent
in the Armed Forces in World War oe
has operated it since.
Now chairman of Colquitts Soil Con-
servation Steering Committee, Murphy
was president of the countys Farm Bu-

ing spring fat lambs, which is the main
money crop in sheep production. The
lambs should be put on the market about
May 15.
At present there are only two wool
outlets in Georgia; one at Rossville, the
other at Milledgeville. In the next few
years it is expected that there will be an-
other wool outlet in the state. There will
also be a number of lamb pools set up
whereby farmers can pool spring fat
lambs for market, for grading and selling
to meat packers at auction.
Some farmers are staying out of the
sheep business due to the stray dog prob-
lem. By following the sheep program as
outlined by the Extension Service and
taking recommended precautions the
farmer will not be caused undue worry.
CAN BE CONTROLLED
Parasites at one time was a major
reason why Georgia practically went out

of the sheep business. Today they can be
controlled. Stray dogs and internal and
external parasites were the two main
factors in reducing Georgias sheep pop-
ulation from one-half million during Civil
War days to about 7,000 in recent years.
Rising cattle prices also accounted for
some loss of interest in sheep production.
The Extension Service believes that
in the next five to eight years the sheep
industry in Georgia will expand such
that income from this-source could be
increased as much as $15,000,000 annual-
ly. However, it is suggested that sheep
production be used as a
- STATE WELL-
farm income rather than as the farm's
lone enterprise.
supplementary
OUTLOOK BRIGHT
There is much land laying out in the
state that could be easily converted to
sheep production. The outlook for the |
sheep industry is very good, brightened,
too, by announcement that the federal
government for the first time is offering
an incentive payment in order to get
farmers to produce more wool.
We now import a tremendous amount
of wool from Australia.
Georgia farmers have become much
more conscious of the advantages of sheep |
raising, and many of them are going into
the sheep business this year.
