sired heifers from PROVED BULLS to

_be sure of inheritance, Have an expert

select the bull, assuring good stock and

therefore greater ability for increased

production.

3. Increase the. average production
er cow four times and double the milk
tiedon per aere. ed

4. Using modern eine one
ran should be able to feed, clean, and
milk 100 cows in eight hours. Cows to be
enilked at the rate of 35 or possibly 60-75
animals per hour. Milking time 10-14
or 12 to 12 hours apart results in the
ame amount of milk.

5. For quality milk production in-

_-9ection should include: healthy cows,

clean udders, sanitized utensils, and milk

cooled within an hour. Quality milk ap-

_ peals to the consumer and is even more

trates. Cellulose fibers can only be di--

necessary for stored products.

6. The cows rumen (upper or first
stomach) is built for forage, not concen-
gested by organisms in the cows stomach.

7. Pasture, hay and silage should

produce 80 percent of the milk output. It

quality hay and Silage. Research shows

- is a good idea to allow free choice by the

cows of hay and silage in self-feeders.

8. Cut crop at the right time for
ground hay will lower the butterfat con-
tent, so long as hay should be fed.

@. Qats or abruzzi rye are the same
in grazing value. However, abruzzi rye

is earlier.

10. Coastal Bermuda and Starr Cat-
tail Millet afford more summer grazing.

Before planting grazing crops, apply 100

lbs. of pure nitrogen, plus 300-500 Ibs.
of 0-10-20 and top dress with 100 lbs. of
nitrate of soda when growth is two to
three inches high. :

bermuda fo silage. Well-fertilized coast-
al bermuda for hay is worth more than
good alfalfa.

12. Milk at 25 cents per quart equals
otner food for 38 cents. A dollars worth

of milk. is equal to $1.50 value ow other -

foods. -

13. Feed salt-mineral mixture andes:

shed and provide fresh, clean water near-

by at all times,

14. Have your veterinarian keep close

check on your herd for Brucellosis (Bangs

Disease) and cooperate with theestate and

federal governmenis in helping to wipe

imals and up to $50 for purebreds will
be repaid to those slaughtering diseased
animals in addition to the cost of testing.

15. If you need money to enlarge or
improve your operation in order to get
more efficiency for higher profits you
may want to consult your banker, who
is in a position to furnish insured loans
for periods not longer than 10 years..The
banker and your County Agent will: be

glad to help you work out your problems.
Under such a loan, for example, a pipe-

line aerator and holding tank might be
considered.

16. Try to be a top farmer. There is
a wide gap between an average farmer
and a top farmer, just as there is be-
tween a low-profit operation and a high-
profit one.

Drought Emergency Cover
Practice Announced

Georgia farmers will get valuable
aid through the Agricultural Conserva-
tion Program for planting Spring graz-
ing and hay crops this Spring seco ee
| to Mr. John F. Bradley, Chairman

the Georgia State ASC Committee.

: To help farmers establish quick
cover, grazing and forage erops in
drought-damaged areas, the Federal
Government is offering to pay around
50 percent of the cost of liming, fertiliz-
ing and seeding annual lespedeza, millet,
sudan grass and hairy indigo this Spring
for grazing or hay. This Spring Drought
Emergency Practice will be announced
to farmers in counties when the prac-
tice has been approved and adopted by
the county technical group. No addi-
tional ACP funds have been allocated to
this state or counties for this practice,
Mr. Bradley explained.

Farmers wishing to receive cyst-
sharing under the new practice should
file their requests at the county ASC
office prior to the time the practice is
started.

Since heat and drought, espe-
cially in the southeastern and
southeentral States, have been

cies, it behooves the farmer to

for droughts, as best he can,
when they come.

Obviously his cropping system
should not be entirely geared to
drought emergencies, for periods
of heavy rainfall also need to be
considered. He can, however,
learn lessons from recent
droughts and try to plant a large
percentage of his acreage to
those crops and plan his rotations.
to meet the various conditions
that may arise. ~

From much weather history it
appears likely that the farmers
of certain States will face vary-
ing periods of moisture shortages
every year. Research and obser-
vations have made it possible to
offer certain suggestions that if
followed should be helpful in les-
sening the effects of prolonged
dry-weather conditions.

Sudangrass has been a most de-
pendable grazing crop in severe
summer droughts. Lespedeza se-
ricea where adapted has given
fair grazing continuously from
June until October. Small grain
wheat, oats and especially grain

Seven crop and soil specialists

were called-upon to give a com-
parative evaluation of legumes
and commercial fertilizers as
sources of nitrogen for crop
production. Extracts from their
comments given in CROPS AND
SOILS indicate the complexity
of the problem.
, Graber of Wisconsin says that
it is hard to foresee the abah-
donment of legumes in favor of
total dependence on synthetic ni-
trogen and grass. Quick-acting
nitrogen fertilizers have their
place, but he doesnt think it
likely that they will replace leg-
umes, on which we have de-
pended so long and so much for
feed and for fertility:

Our immense nitrogen - fixing
industry has taken over the
primary function of legumes in
grain rotations, i.e., fixing nitro-
gen, according to Bray of Illi-
nois. He says that old-time leg-
ume rotations are.on their way

signed to grow legumes, and
the grains were fitted into the
legume program. , But with
grasses, the principal objective
can be to grow the maximum
yield} of grain as often as
possible,

As to the future of legumes,
Willard of Ohio reminds us that
om many soils, tap-rooted leg-
umes put part of their nitrogen
and organic matter into the
subsoil, and wonders whether
corn roots and nitrogen will keep
the soil and subsoil in as good
physical condition.

It will be well, he says, for
the fertilizer dealer to keep in
mind that we can obtain nitro-
gen at home if we have the in-

well not to tear up too many
good-farming systems in favor of
one so completely at the mercy
of price relationships.
