lowed by 3,932 acres of tobacco, and 3,267
acres of truck crops. The report also-re-
vealed that 2,539 acres of corn was grown
under irrigation in 1954, Other crops irri-
gated by Georgia farmers last year were:
peanuts 251 acres; cotton 276; and
_ peaches 606 acres.
This expansion in ce oton did not
come without. some problems. The num-
- ber one problem was an adequate water
supply. It takes 27,154 gallons to apply
water one inch deep on one acre of land.
_ In the Piedmont area of the state, lakes,
_ streams, and ponds are excellent sources
of water for irrigation. Deep wells for
irrigation in this section of the state are
not a reliable source of water. A six inch

well 400 to 500 feet deep may not produce

more than 25 to 75 gallons per minute,
- which is not-enough to be of much value

in irrigation. At 50 gallons per minute,

it takes 10 hours to put an ineh of water
on one acre.
Farm ponds can be consiieed | in most

~ sections of the Piedmont. The soils are

such that ponds are satisfactory in most
cases, and numerous hills and valleys
- provide excellent pond sites. Some wells
in this area bring in enough water for
irrigation, but the geological formation of
- the soil is such that one well may be satis-

factory while another a few feet away

will not produce enough water.

In the Coastal Plain Section of the

State, deep wells can be drilled for irri-
gation and get sufficient water. A six inch
well may produce as much as 350 gallons
per minute which would irrigate 25 to 30
acres of land. Tobacco, and truck crops
can be profitably irrigated from deep
wells provided the acreage is large enough
to take care of the extra cost in drilling
the, wells. A farmer who has less than
10 acres of tobacco will have a time mak-
ing irrigation from a deep well pay unless

~ he irrigated several other high yielding
~ crops.

- . A well in the Camilla area will pro-
duce sufficient water supply for irriga-

- tion at 300 to 350 feet, but in the States-

| boro and Reidsville areas it will have to

be 500 feet or more in most cases.

A six inch well will produce from 200
to 300 gallons per minute and will cost.
from $4.25 to $5.50 per foot to drill. The
capacity of an eight inch well should be
from 450 to 700 gallons per minute and
cost $5.00 to $7.50 a foot. A ten inch well

will cost $750 to $9.00 a foot and should

deliver up to 1000 gallons per minute.

The cost will vary within the different

sections of the state.

- As a rule an irrigation system that
- will irrigate from 40 to 60 acres will cost

$100.00 an acre. This doesnt include the
_ water supply. A system smaller. will cost

Nee PAG S : ne i

NUMBER 28

more per acre while a larger system will
cost less on an acre basis.

Research test shows that irrigation
can be profitable th most years on tobac-

co, nurseries, truck crops, and pastures for -

dairy cows. Research data now available
indicates that irrigation of cotton may be

profitable. .

__ A study made on the cost of irriga-
tion shows. that it cost $5.50 to put an
inch of water on an acre of land. This in-

eludes cost of fuel, labor, taxes, interes~

cn investment, and depreciation on the
equipment. Most crops will require from

3 to 5 applications per season on the aver-

age.

Gorn will use .23 oe of water per
day; cotton .21 inches per day; tobacco
16 inches per. day; sweet potatoes .23
inches per day; onions, cabbage, lettuce,
and turnip greens .13 inches per day: ean-
taloupes, squash, snap beans, peppers,
egg plants, watermelons and okra .18
inches per day; peaches .19 inches per

day: winter pasture .14 inches per day;

and summer pastures .24 inches per day.

A farmer in Dougherty County irri-
gated 22 acres of cattail millet last year.
Thirty days after planting he started graz-
ing 65 steers on it and six weeks later
cut a ton of hay to the acre. He also irri-
gated corn and Coastal Bermuda and got
good results from both. -

Another farmer near Blackshear irri- _

gated 10 acres of tobacco and sold over
$1,000.00 worth per acre. He irrigated
15 acres of cotton one time during the
fruity stage of cotton and increased the
yield a half bale to the acre over the cot-
ton -he did not irrigate. His increased
sales due to irrigation amounted to $5,-
700.00 above the cost of irrigation.
