EORGIA NEED

ment needed to complete this marketing

system making it the outstanding farm

products market in the United States.

The additional development needed is a

larger market in the District of Columbia
where merchants would come in their
trucks from Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Phila-
delphia, Harrisburg, Washington, and
other large consuming centers.

This would give us an outlet for all
surplus farm products we eould produce
in the Southeast over and above our own
needs,

A marketing system also in its broad
sense covers the establishment of grain

elevators, the further development of

pastures and livestock and other great
developments in processing plants of
many kinds.

Georgia needs the development of the
dairy industry in the broad sense to in-
elude processed milk of all kinds. Also
the development of poultry and eggs
and development of redrying plants and

- storage warehouses for tobacco and other

perishable crops.
2. Georgia and Atlanta, needs equal-

ized freight rates to put us on an equality

on a mileage basis with other sections of
the -country.

If you will draw a line from Valdosta,
Georgia, to New York, from New York
to Chicago, from Chicago back to Val-
dosta you will have a triangle of roughly,
900 miles on each side. The center of
that triangle will of course be within an
average distance of 225 miles of consum-
ing population totaling around sixty mil-
lion people.

This gives Georgia a geographic ad-
vantage over any other state that is able
to grow the great diversity and varieties

of products that Georgia is capable of

producing.
Equal transportation rates on a mile-

age basis would give Georgia a position

that can be commanding in commerce

between agriculture and agricultural
products and the consuming millions in

_and adjacent to such triangle.

Our post-war plans should include
regular daily air transports from produc-

ing centers in Georgia to large consuming

centers in the North and East, especially
with regard to fresh milk, butter, eggs,
vegetables, fruits, fish, etc.

3. Georgia, and Atlanta, needs to
get back to fundamental principles. We
need to be equally forgetful of Pros-

perity is just around the corner, with

two cars for each garage and the promise
of Santa Claus from the National Treas-
ury to give every one a living without
having to work for it.

Georgia, and Atlanta, needs unselfish
cooperation between banks, business, in-
dustry and farmers. None can enjoy pros-
perity based on firm foundation unless
that prosperity reaches all four.

An adequate supply of money that
can be had by people who are willing to
help themselves on long terms at low
interest rates.is indispensable to the pro-
per development of this State.

We have plenty of rugged Georgia
stock, as well as people who have come
to make their home with us, who only
want a fair opportunity to work out their
own salvation to again make Georgia the
Empire State.

These are the only people who can
and will develop Georgia. For Georgia
to be what Georgia should be we must
have more people farming on their own
land more city people living in their own
homes, more independent business men
and more progressive ideas.

You cannot make a farm owner out

of a man who is not willing to help him-
self. It can be made possible for those

who are willing to help themselves to
do so.

I realize that the above statements of
the needs of Georgia, and Atlanta, are
very general in their nature, but in the
limitations of a letter it is impossible
to go into specific details.

However, I would be glad should de-
velopements bring about further discus-
sions of the matter to meet with you and
talk in more detail of my ideas in this
connection.

With kindest regards, I am

Sincerely yours,
TOM LINDER
Commissioner of Agriculture
